The Fannie and Freddie Takeover
and its Impact on the National Housing Trust Fund

As the foreclosure crisis spreads to prime loans and the number of mortgage holders who are having trouble making payments is at an all-time high, Secretary of the Treasury Henry Paulson announced an unprecedented takeover of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, the two giant government sponsored enterprises (GSE). In announcing the takeover, Secretary Paulson said, "Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac are so large and so interwoven in our financial system that a failure of either of them would cause great turmoil in our financial markets here at home and around the globe."
