We’re down on Bond Street, in Chuck Close’s railroad Manhattan studio, and the master portrait artist is telling me how kids all over America feel about him. “They hate my guts,” he says, mischievously. It’s nothing personal. It’s just that many of them have at some point been assigned by an art teacher to draw something in Close’s signature mosaic style, using a grid of dots or fingerprints—the arduous method of the man who helped to usher in photorealism. All around us are giant faces: a colorful and iconic self-portrait of Close and a poster of Close’s famous black-and-white rendering of composer Philip Glass, among others. “They’re forced to make these things,” Close says, modestly, still on the students. “For every one who’s inspired there are probably a thousand who run in the opposite direction.”
