Welcome to the LewerMark Express!
by Jeff Crawford, Director of the LewerMark Student Insurance Programs

Greetings LewerMark clients and friends! In an effort to provide a service to you and other college and university student health insurance administrators, The Lewer Agency is proud to introduce the LewerMark Express.

LewerMark Client, DeDe Long, ‘Keeps Pushing’ for the Future of International Education

On Monday, July 28, 2008, the vote to move forward on “The Advancing America’s Priorities Act” failed in the Senate after a 52 – 40 vote (60 votes were needed to move to debate on the bill). The Advancing America’s Priorities Act (S.3297) was an omnibus authorization bill that contained a group of bipartisan pieces of legislation with broad support that were otherwise blocked in the Senate. The bill included provisions in a variety of areas, including the Simon Study Abroad Foundation Act. In response to the bill’s failure, NAFSA director, DeDe Long, Vice President for Public Policy and Practice since January 2008, expressed her disappointment, but she remains optimistic.

Four More Members Join LewerMark Team

It wasn't that long ago when the LewerMark team in the home office consisted of just a few, select individuals. In recent years, the team continues to expand at a steady pace, now employing more individuals than any other department in the company. The Lewer Agency recently expanded its customer service team, again, after hiring three more customer service representatives and a new account manager. As the company's student insurance programs continue to be utilized on a growing number of campuses across the country, the expansion of the LewerMark customer support team in the home office ensures the continuation of the prompt and personalized service The Lewer Agency's clients have come to expect and value from the LewerMark team.

Treatment of Tuberculosis Covered for LewerMark Clients

In a July 2008 report prepared by the American College Health Association Tuberculosis Guidelines Task Force, the ACHA advised that students should be screened for risk factors for TB through a screening questionnaire. The United States is primarily a low-incidence country, so most U.S. born incoming students will not have risk factors for TB and will not need TB testing. However, according to the ACHA, international students arriving from countries with an increased incidence of TB should be tested because this subpopulation has been identified epidemiologically as having a higher incidence of Latent TB Infection (LTBI) and is subsequently at increased risk for developing active TB disease.

Lewer Attends 11th Annual NAFSA Conference
Record Number of Visitors Reported at Booth

The Lewer Agency attended The National NAFSA Conference kick-off on Memorial Day, May 26, in Washington, D. C. It was The Lewer Agency's 11th conference since becoming a member in 1997. After setting-up their exhibit, LewerMark director Jeff Crawford and president Mike Lewer attended the “Connecting with your Colleagues” reception hosted by NAFSA.

LewerMark Now Serves Parents ‘Visiting Abroad’

Effective September 1, 2008, travel arrangements for parents planning a trip abroad to visit their kids can conveniently and cost-effectively be arranged through The Lewer Agency’s travel partner, Travel Leaders, formerly Carlson Wagonlit Travel.

International Student Falls Prey to Dishonest Doctor
Lewer Alerts Client Schools of Possible Trend

Bill Clinton was once quoted as saying, “There will always be bad guys out there in the world who will try to take advantage of people’s vulnerabilities.” Was he referring to dishonest doctors and unsuspecting international students when he made that comment? According to the Washington State Department of Health Medical Quality Assurance Commission, this is a story of "unprofessional conduct" that dates back to 1999 when a doctor in Washington state acquired his license.

LewerMark Attends Orientation at Washington University: In August, president Mike Lewer, LewerMark director Jeff Crawford, and Nicole Lewer, assisted incoming students at Washington University in St. Louis during orientation week. “We attended the Wash U 2008 Parent Orientation Health and Wellness Plan event, followed by the Parent Resource Fair," reported Mike. "The Parent Resource Fair held in the commons of the just completed Danforth University Center, provided us with the opportunity to answer questions and distribute materials regarding the health plan as well as the optional prescription drug and dental programs."
