7-Eleven opens at South and Bellflower

Kevin Brar, who was raised in Lakewood and recently graduated from Cal State Long Beach with a business degree, is opening Lakewood's newest business, a 7-Eleven at the northwest corner of South Street and Bellflower Boulevard.

Brar expects to hire 11 employees for his new store, which will be open 24 hours day. The 7-Eleven will feature pizza, hot dogs, fresh coffee, dairy and many popular convenience items. 7-Elevens started in 1927 in Dallas, Texas, and have grown to 8,900 outlets in North America-more than any other retailer. Hall of Fame tickets go on sale today

Tickets for the 31st Annual Lakewood Youth Hall of Fame banquet go on sale today at Lakewood City Hall. The awards banquet is scheduled for Monday, February 27, at 6:30 p.m., at The Centre at Sycamore Plaza. It will honor the 2011 Athlete of the Year and more than 25 other deserving athletes and coaches. The order form is online.

Construction alert for Del Amo Boulevard

In coming days Lakewood motorists will see construction at ten locations along Del Amo Boulevard from Palo Verde Avenue to Downey Avenue. Crews are expected to spend only three days at each location installing large underground water valves. The city's Public Works Department has planned the work to avoid busy commuting hours. Construction will occur from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The work may add to traffic congestion during those times, but at no time will an entire direction of traffic be blocked.

The water valve work is being done in advance of repaving a two-mile segment of Del Amo Boulevard in coming months.

The Lakewood Sheriff's 5K/10K Community Run returns Saturday, March 10 when sheriff's deputies, recreational runners, families and kids will gather at the starting line in front of the Lakewood Sheriff's Station to run the event's 5K/10K course for time, or do the 1-mile "Family Fun Run" or a 5K walk. Volunteer/participate in Lakewood's 'Relay For Life'

The 24-hour Relay for Life is returning to Lakewood on Saturday, May 19, at 9:00 a.m., at the Artesia High School track. Teams of friends, neighbors, families, co-workers, school and church groups will keep at least one member walking the course during the relay "because cancer never sleeps."

Lakewood teams and volunteers are gathering now. Get involved by attending one of the local organizing meetings held at the Lakewood Village Community Church, 4515 Sunfield Avenue, on the third Monday of each month. Team captains meet at 6:30 p.m. and the organizing committee meets at 7:30 p.m.

The meetings are a great way to get up to speed on forming your own team, or learning about volunteering. Prospective teams will find materials online at www.relayforlife.org/lakewoodca. Mayor Van Nostran and Sheriff's Captain Ladenheim reflect on the year past and the year ahead

Over 200 Lakewood residents and community leaders gathered last Wednesday at noon at The Centre at Sycamore Plaza to hear Mayor Larry Van Nostran and Lakewood Sheriff's Station Captain Merrill Ladenheim discuss the state of the city, including what happened in Lakewood in 2011 and what's ahead in 2012.

Rebroadcasts of the annual report video and the addresses by Mayor Van Nostran and Captain Ladenheim will run on CityTV Channel 31 from February 5 to February 23 (on Sundays and Thursdays at 12:00 a.m. and p.m. and 7:30 a.m. and p.m.).

"Choose Happiness" is the theme for the 2012 Lakewood Mayor's Prayer Breakfast. This year's keynote speaker will be Dr. Susan Mathieu, Senior Adult Program Coordinator at the Alpert Jewish Community Center in Long Beach and the Program Director for Active Adult Community Connection, a grant funded by the Archstone Foundation.
