Are you authenticating the person or their card?

by Bob Mesnik

Probably the earliest form of authentication was the guard at the door; if he recognized the person or if they said the right password the guard would let them in. The next great invention was the key and lock which allowed you to carry around your own authentication. This has been around for quite a while. As a matter of fact archeologists discovered a wooden lock and key that was 4,000 years old at the Khorsabad palace ruins near Nineveh in Egypt. This forerunner of today’s locks was made out of wood. Keys and locks may be good for your home, but not the best thing when you are controlling access to a large organization with many people.

What is the best way to insure that the right person will get into your facility?  Door access control systems use everything from entering a number on a keypad to biometric recognition. This article goes beyond the classic key-lock system and reviews the various technologies you can consider for automated authentication. We compared cost, and ease of use versus security.

In this age when everyone has a cellphone camera, and is always snapping away, they figured someone must have caught something, and so they extended their plea to the public, please share your video with us. Well, share they did!
