Get into the Rhythm of the Carolinas
Exciting college campus events promise to entertain.

Music and dance bring the Carolinas to life this season. Fill your calendar with can’t-miss events held at your local college or university.

Get a feel for the sounds of Carolina’s Piedmont Region during a performance by the Carolina Chocolate Drops at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Performing at Memorial Hall, the Grammy-award winning Carolina Chocolate Drops are known for reviving the unique sounds of black string-band music, giving generations-old songs a contemporary touch. During their performance at UNC on February 3, 2012, they’ll collaborate with Luminescent Orchestrii, a New York-based group that blends the elements of jazz, string-band and more for a truly inventive sound. For ticket prices and information about other upcoming events, visit www.carolinaperformingarts.org/performances/event.aspx.

You’ll find it hard to resist dancing in your seat during the Prophets of Funk – Dance to the Music by David Dorfman Dance, at the Stewart Theatre at North Carolina State University in Raleigh. Performed to the powerful, moving sounds of Sly and the Family Stone, an American rock, soul and funk band, this event promises to inspire. Ticket pricing and a full schedule of events is available at www.ncsu.edu/theatre/currentseason.html.

Visit the Addlestone Library at the College of Charleston and you’ll find an enlightening exhibit documenting humankind’s attempts to understand and map the moon. The exhibit, titled Man and the Moon: A Lunar Exploration, demonstrates how technological advances have helped scientists develop a greater understanding of the moon. The display runs through March 3, 2012 and showcases major moments in history such as Galileo’s first observations and NASA’s documentation of the Apollo lunar landings. Located in historic Charleston, South Carolina, the College of Charleston was founded in 1770 and offers a distinctive blend of historic charm and modern educational facilities. Find information about this and other upcoming events at http://calendar.cofc.edu/EventList.aspx.

Experience a rousing brass and percussion music spectacular as Blast! takes the stage on January 23, 2012 at Clemson University’s Brooks Center for the Performing Arts in Clemson, South Carolina. Boasting a 2001 Tony Award for “Best Special Theatrical Event” and an Emmy Award for “Best Choreography,” Blast! is described as “a novel art form that evolved from the showmanship and pageantry of marching bands.” If you’re looking for a more relaxed evening of music, don’t miss Cantus, one of the country’s premier men’s vocal ensembles, as they perform pieces by Bach, Wagner, The Beatles, Johnny Cash and more on February 7, 2012. Find more events scheduled at the Brooks Center at www.clemson.edu/Brooks.

Whether you enjoy theater, athletics, science, music or art, the local colleges and universities of North and South Carolina have plenty to keep you and your family busy.
