Crowded mountains. The same trails. This year, instead of hitting your local slopes, why not take your skiing or boarding to the next level? And when we say next level, we mean soaring above mountains. It’s time to take your skiing to a new level – something that will leave you exhilarated and wanting more. It’s time for you to experience heli-skiing.
The ultimate world-class heli-skiing and snowboarding is with the Ruby Mountains Heli-Experience in Lamoille, Nevada. Ruby Mountains Helicopter Skiing offers three-day packages, as well as single-day skiing, with a vertical guarantee of 39,000 feet.
Towering over the high desert of eastern Nevada, the Ruby Mountains range spans 60 miles in length and boasts 10 peaks including the 11,387-foot Ruby Dome. From wide-open bowls to heart-racing fall lines, you’ll find what you need to get that skiing thrill. Imagine 200,000 square miles of pristine wilderness. Imagine limitless terrain. It’s just you and Mother Nature. You can coast through waist-high powder or bomb down sheer fall lines.
How do you get to the top? By helicopter, of course! The helicopters used by Ruby Mountains Helicopter Skiing can hold up to five skiers. The benefits of using the helicopter: It’s intimate and it allows you to access some of the most remote terrain around, not to mention the best possible snow conditions. If the weather makes it difficult to fly, you’ll use snowcats.
After you’ve spent your day skiing in the Rubies, sit back and relax. Nestled at the base of the Rubies, in the small ranching community of Lamoille, is your lodge, a throwback to the
hunting lodges of the past. The lodge features 10 bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms, while the main lodge boasts a cozy great room, complete – of course – with a magnificent stone fireplace. Plus, there’s a billiards room and well-stocked library of favorite novels.
Fun Fact: The Ruby Mountains got their name during the early gold rush days in the 1800s when the U.S. Army came to Nevada to help pioneers find routes to California. Soldiers panned for gold in the range’s streambeds, finding garnets, which they mistook for rubies.
In the Rubies, you can experience calm blue-sky days, but temperatures can fall below zero, with howling winds and blizzard-like conditions. The arrival and departure of the helicopters creates a microclimate of swirling snow and wind from the rotors that, even though lasting only for a few seconds, is something you have to dress for. So what should you bring? Come to the Rubies prepared with any clothing and equipment you might need for any day you go skiing (think goggles, sunglasses, hats, gloves, ski clothes and sun block). However, you should also be prepared for the extremes of weather and snow conditions, so it’s recommended to layer your clothing and have a water-resistant layer on the outside. (Useful Tip: Thick parkas are not recommended!)
As part of your three-day tour package, you will be provided with Rossignol powder skis and poles. Ski boot rental is unavailable, so make sure you bring your ski boots! Ruby Mountain Helicopter Skiing has a small retail shop with goggles, hats, fleece garments and other items available.
Are you ready for an unforgettable experience?
The three-day package is $4,100 per person and includes all your meals, three nights lodging, guide service and ski rental. Single-day skiing is available on Thursdays; it is $1,325 per person and includes lodging on your arrival night, breakfast and lunch, guide service and six heli runs.
