Dr. Bodai currently directs the Breast Health Centerat the Kaiser Permanente Sacramento. A strong advocate of breast cancer research, Dr. Bodai lobbied Congress and the U.S. Postal Service in 1998 to issue the Breast Cancer Research Stamp, which has raised over $70 million for disease research. Study Suggests Side Effects Can Help Determine Whether Breast Cancer Drug is Working

Many women receive the drugs tamoxifen or anastrozole (Arimidex) as part of their breast cancer treatment. Now, a new study finds that women who experience side effects from the drug may have an indication that the drugs are working. The study found that women who took tamoxifen or anastrozole suffered side effects such as hot flashes, night sweats, and painful joints were 10 percent less likely to have a recurrence of breast cancer than women who did not have the symptoms.

While there is no sure-fire method of preventing ovarian cancer and no gold-standard screening test to detect the disease, the best method of defense against ovarian cancer is a yearly pelvic exam beginning at age 18. Physicians perform pelvic exams to check for abnormalities in the size or shape of the uterus, vagina, ovaries, Fallopian tubes, bladder, and rectum. Genetic testing is also available to certain high-risk women. In addition, some practices, such as early pregnancy and breast-feeding, have been linked to a reduced ovarian cancer risk, although the science is complex.
