NATIONAL BREAST CANCER COALITION FUND INVITES APPLICATIONS FOR AWARDS

The National Breast Cancer Coalition Fund (NBCCF) has received a
generous grant from the Breast Cancer Fund of the National Philanthropic Trust. With this funding, NBCCF seeks applications for up to six $25,000 to $50,000 awards recognizing organizations whose strategic, high-impact programs in breast cancer quality care, access and/or research can serve as models for other organizations nationwide. The deadline for application submission is August 15, 2006.


FDA ADVISORY PANEL BACKS CERVICAL CANCER VACCINE

On June 8, 2006 the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved a vaccine aimed at preventing cervical cancer and vulvar and vaginal pre-cancers. The vaccine, called Gardasil, had been shown to be effective at blocking cervical cancers caused by certain strains of the human papillomavirus (HPV), a common sexually transmitted disease.

Magnetic resonance breast imaging (MRI, MR) has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) since 1991 for use as a supplemental tool, in addition to mammography, to help diagnose breast cancer. Breast MRI is an excellent problem-solving technology. It is often used to investigate breast concerns first detected with mammography, physical exam, or other imaging exams. While the vast majority of breast cancer cases occur in women,
approximately 1& of cases occur in men. The American Cancer Society estimates that about 1,450 new cases of invasive breast cancer are diagnosed in men each year and approximately 470 men die from breast cancer annually.
