Clothesline Project Exhibited in NY
by Esther-Ann Asch

The Clothesline Project exhibit was on display August 7 through August 13, 2004, at Galerie Rimonim in East Hampton, NY. Titled "Be'Ad Hamishpacha: For the Sake of the Family," the exhibit showcased more than 100 t-shirts created by women and girls who have survived family and domestic abuse. Shelley Herman, president-elect of JWI, helped organize the exhibit.

The t-shirts were a powerful illustration and painful reminder of the prevalence and devastation of family violence.

The show was sponsored by the Task Force on Family Violence at UJA Federation, founded by Anita Altman and currently chaired by Kathy Rosenthal of FEGS and Jackie Miller of JBFCS, ELEM Youth in Distress, and JWI. The gallery for the exhibit was donated by Rebecca Rosen.

Last year, 30 lay and professional leaders of the Task Force on the Jewish Woman, chaired by Esther-Ann Asch, produced and starred in the "Vagina Monologues" at Town Hall in New York. The event raised $250,000 for four domestic violence projects and heightened community awareness on the issue.

The Clothesline Exhibit show expanded that event's success by further educating the community about the devastating impact of domestic violence.
