Congregational Advocacy through Support and Education
by Susan Lebovitz

The CASE program started in September 2003, when Johnson County’s Community Violence Action Council’s (COMVAC) Faith Committee developed a volunteer-run program for area congregations. The CASE program enables congregations to offer support and education for domestic abuse victims through a trained, lay volunteer.

Members of congregations volunteer for CASE to serve as advocates for fellow congregants who are suffering from domestic abuse and feel uncomfortable approaching the clergy. Volunteers provide countywide resources, which they receive from Faith Committee members.

The program helps victims who may not know of available services. The hope is that congregants will feel comfortable reaching out to someone in their own faith community. Each congregation takes responsibility for publicizing the program.

Volunteers participate in an eight-hour training to learn the intricacy of the county court system, the affects of domestic violence on children, as well as symptoms of elder abuse.

If you would like more information about the CASE program please contact Susan Lebovitz, slebovitz@safehome-ks.org.
