The Forgotten Refugees

Jews from Arab Lands

When the issue of Middle East refugees is mentioned, what comes to mind?  For most people, it is not the 856,000 Sephardi Jews who lived in Arab lands at the founding of Israel in 1948 – or the less than 1% that remain in those lands today.

The JCRC, in partnership with JIMENA and Justice for Jews from Arab Lands (JfJ), is trying to change that.  This summer the JCRC hosted an educational forum for synagogue representatives about the exodus of Sephardic and Mizrachi Jews from the Middle East.  Representatives of JIMENA and JfJ, who were in town to testify before the Congressional Human Rights Caucus chaired by Congressman Tom Lantos, participated in the discussion.

Jewish Voters Turned Out... Now Advocacy Continues!
Jewish Community Debates Draw Hundreds Throughout Region

Candidate Adrian Fenty takes the microphone at Mayoral Forum with Linda Cropp and others at the ready to respond. JCRC Vice President Paul Greenberg (left) moderates.

Jewish voters were paying close attention to tight races throughout Greater Washington. Their participation at primary voting precincts and JCRC candidate forums throughout the region presaged a strong turnout in November.  At the Washington DC Jewish Community Center, nearly 250 individuals came to meet the five major candidates.  Two Jewish community forums for Council Chairmen - one in Montgomery County, the other in the District were also well attended.  Look for more program listings in our "Upcoming Events" section, including a Northern Virginia Legislative Reception on November 27 at the Jewish Community Center in Northern Virginia, and parlour meetings throughout Montgomery County with state officials.
