APRIL 30 - SAVE DARFUR RALLY AGAINST GENOCIDE WASHINGTON, DC Touloum refugee camp. Like kids anywhere, many of the refugee children in Chad are living in the moment, even though they have seen things no child should have to see, borne burdens no child should have to bear. What future will these children have? (photo and text by Jerry Fowler, United States Holocaust Memorial Museum)

JCRC Press Release Condemns Hate Speech Against Islam
Washington, DC – The JCRC of Greater Washington condemns the hateful and bigoted speech against Islam and Muslims by Pat Robertson on the “700 Club” program this week. During this show on Monday, March 13, Mr. Robertson called Muslims “demonic” and “satanic” and said “Islam is not a religion of peace.” The JCRC finds such inflammatory and hateful language dangerous and hurtful, as well as bigoted, as no religion or people should be condemned by the actions or beliefs of a few individuals. We call on Mr. Robertson to apologize for any hurt he has caused, to repudiate violence and bigotry, and to refrain in the future from using his status and power to spread hate and fear.

Virginia Legislative Reviews Coming to You!
On March 27th the 2006 Virginia General Assembly session goes into overtime at the Governor’s request to address Virginia’s transportation woes. As we await budget results and action on our social service funding requests, we have much to report from the session itself. Building on last year’s successes from JCRC’s first time full-time lobbying coverage in Virginia, the JCRC has become a leading source for lawmakers’ on agenda items such as first amendment religious protections. We have once again doubled record Northern Virginia attendance at Jewish Advocacy Day – bringing our community members from Alexandria through Loudoun, Fredericksburg and beyond to meet with the Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General and 41 State Senators and Delegates. In addition, we have reached out in Fairfax County for the first time to pursue local government-non-profit partnerships at the same time we are responding to our community’s needs at the federal level.

Mayor O'Malley tours Jewish Community Campus
On March 7, 2006 Martin O’Malley, mayor of Baltimore and Democratic candidate for Governor of Maryland, visited the Jewish Community Campus. On his tour of our human service facilities, Mayor O’Malley visited the Hebrew Home, Jewish Social Service Agency, Jewish Community Center, and the Misler Adult Day Care center. In all, Mayor O’Malley spent two hours learning about the numerous programs and services our agencies offer and the ways in which each agency has been able to partner with the state to enhance their services.
