Point/Counterpoint: Evolution VS 'Intelligent Design'
Should 'intelligent design" be taught in public school?
In August, President Bush endorsed teaching 'intelligent design' - the belief that the universe is so complex that it must have been created by a higher power - alongside evolution, a move that was met with criticism in the science community. On Nov. 8, all eight Dover, Pa., school board members up for re-election were defeated after trying to introduce 'intelligent design' as an alternative to the theory of evolution. The same day the Kansas Board of Education rewrote its public school science standards so that students will learn that Darwinian Theory has been challenged in recent years. In addition, the board rewrote the definition of science, so that it is no longer limited to the search for "natural explanations" of phenomena, inferring that supernatural explanations pose alternatives to evolutionary theory.

DC Loves Darfur
Greater Washington Jewish Community launches fundraising campaign for Darfur refugees
www.ajws.org/dclovesdarfur
The DC Loves Darfur Campaign is the Greater Washington Jewish Task Force on Darfur fundraising effort, in conjunction with American Jewish World Service, and a sister campaign to the national "Dear Sudan" project. In Judaism, the word chai means life, and the numerical equivalent of the letters is 18. Between Thanksgiving and Chanukah, November 24, 2005 – January 1, 2006, DC Loves Darfur hopes to give life by raising at least 18 cents for each of the 215,000 Jews in our community ($38,700) to support AJWS' Sudan Relief and Advocacy Fund. For additional information or materials, please contact Julie Weingrad at jweingrad@jcouncil.org or 301-770-0881.

2005 Virginia Elections and the Jewish Agenda
Virginia voters select mixed ticket in state and local races
In a gubernatorial race considered a deadheat throughout much of the fall, Virginia voters once again selected a mixed ticket, electing Democratic contender Tim Kaine with 52% of the vote, alongside conservative Republican Lieutenant Governor Bill Bolling, who edged in with just over 50% of the counted ballots. The final statewide race for Attorney General is headed for a recount, with Republic Bob McDonnell less than 400 votes ahead of Democrat Creigh Deeds and nearly 2 million votes cast.
