Day Laborers: Economic Necessity or Security Threat?
Gathering places for day laborers—primarily Latino immigrants—are a familiar site in the Greater Washington landscape. On September 12, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors voted to spend $400,000 to manage a controversial day laborer site in Herndon, VA, prompting a slew of angry calls that forced officials to unplug the phones. Residents claim the sites bring crime to the area and promote illegal immigration. Others view day laborers as an economic necessity, such as in Fairfax County where such gathering sites supply labor for Northern Virginia’s booming construction industry. Our writers take sides on the issue.
