Paper Clips Diary
Students from Tennessee experience Jewish life in the Capital
The students from the documentary film Paper Clips had no idea that their attempt to collect six million paper clips to honor the victims of the Holocaust would have such a tremendous impact on Jews around the world. In appreciation for their project, the JCRC brought 20 students and four teachers from Whitwell, TN to experience life in the nation's capital.

Bob Woodward stays mum on Deep Throat at JCRC Fundraiser
14 days before Deep Throat is revealed, Woodward gives keynote address at evening honoring S. Robert and Joy W. Cohen
On May 18, 14 days before 91-year-old W. Mark Felt revealed he was “Deep Throat” in the Watergate scandal, Bob Woodward gave the keynote address at the JCRC Fundraiser, notably not revealing the secret that everyone would find out two weeks later.

JCRC Secures Record $3.3 Million for Jewish Agencies
Agencies receive funding from Virginia for the first time ever
This year the JCRC had its most successful year in securing funding for Jewish agencies. With a record $3.3 million coming from local, state, and federal governments, the JCRC exceeded the previous best year by more than $1.2 million. Included in this years funding was almost $1 million from the Federal government to continue the Federation’s NORC demonstration project and almost $640,000 for the Jewish Social Service Agency from the State of Maryland to purchase a new building in upper Montgomery County.

JCRC Wraps Up Virginia Legislative Review Series
Northern Virginia Jewish Community took position on close to 100 legislative items
On June 1st, the JCRC concluded its first state legislative review series with its final event of the season at Temple Beth El in Alexandria, Virginia. The series was co-hosted by nearly a dozen local Jewish agencies and synagogues to bring the events of Virginia’s 2005 legislative session to more than 300 activists from our local community.

Vincent Callahan honored for four decades of public service
JCRC presents first Virginia Legislative Leadership Award
When accepting the award, Chairman Callahan provided a warm and personal overview of his experiences with the Jewish community, dating back to his childhood membership in the DC Jewish Community Center through his more recent experiences participating in a JCRC Mission to Israel and joining the Board of the Jewish Foundation for Group Homes. In responding to thanks from Jewish social service organizations for which he championed State funding, Vince stated that supporting these organizations that support others in the community is one of the best parts of his job.

DC Mayor Anthony Williams addresses Jewish leaders
Mayor Williams provides overview of his Administration's efforts int he District
The Mayor responded to questions ranging from homeland security funding for vulnerable Jewish institutions to improving metro and, the perennial question of DC Statehood. Addressing each with thoughtful and direct responses, the Mayor first pledged his support for earmarking a certain percentage of homeland security funds toward Jewish entities with high vulnerability. He acknowledged that problems with metro transportation were now among the issues “on his radar,” and talked about his advocacy as President of the League of Cities for D.C. Statehood.

JCRC Muslim-Jewish Programming builds goodwill; breaks down barriers
The JCRC engages in an ongoing dialogue with the Muslim community of Montgomery County. Originally a state-wide effort pairing the Baltimore and DC area Jewish communities, the Greater Washington Jewish community has continued to have productive, fun, and relationship building programs with our Muslim neighbors. Some of our programs are still state-wide events.

Reading Mentors are changing lives
Volunteers spend one hour per week reading with local students
A young boy in a Montgomery County public school started the year with reading difficulties. Thanks in part to the wonderful work of a Reading Mentor from the Greater Washington Jewish Coalition for Literacy, this student improved his reading ability an entire grade level this year.
