| Andrew Stern, President Ronald Halber, Executive Director
Welcome to the Premiere Issue
From the Desk of Montgomery County Executive Douglas Duncan
As a long-time partner and friend of the Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater Washington, I am thrilled to introduce the premiere issue of the JCRC’s e-newsletter. The JCRC and I have worked closely for over a decade to address a wide range of issues of concern to the Jewish community, including economic development, education, social welfare and funding for Jewish agencies. This e-newsletter will take the JCRC to the next level of advocacy for the community, and I look forward to working with the JCRC, under the strong leadership of President Andy Stern, as we go together from strength to strength.

Slain teen's family receives $156 million

Eight years later, a Chicago jury awarded the Boim family $156 million in damages, irrevocably changing the legal war on terror in the United States. The landmark case, brought forth by Lewin & Lewin LLP, was built on a foundation of its own making—Nathan Lewin's legal theory that an American citizen could sue not only a terrorist group for civil damages, but also any group or individual who knowingly funds or supports a terrorist group.

Among proposed legislation treading on the separation of church and state is House Joint Bill 537, a suggested amendment to Virginia’s Constitution that would permit prayer on public property, including in public schools.

Literacy project opens doors
Over 40 local volunteers pioneer effort
When Jaime Banks from Adat Shalom Congregation presented a book from her personal “library” to read with her partner student, his eyes widened and he asked, “You have your own library?” For many of the students we work with, the book they received this year from the JCRC/ Greater Washington Jewish Coalition for Literacy book drive was the first book they have ever owned.
