The annual Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance is a celebration of the automobile’s capacity for power, luxury and being on the cutting edge. Year after year, BMW has positioned itself as the star of the show, and 2018 is not likely to change that trend with the Ultimate Driving Machine® set to stun yet again. Before the show kicks off on Aug. 26, you can prepare yourself by taking a look back at some of what BMW has brought to the Concept Lawn in the past years.
Last year, BMW landed a one-two punch with the premiere of the BMW Concept Z4 and BMW Concept 8. Both dynamic concepts excited not just with their presence, but with the promise that both would inform production versions. The Concept 8 effectively broke the 8 Series’ 18-year hiatus, heralding the launch of the BMW 8 Series Coupe this year. The BMW Concept Z4 hints at the return of the beloved roadster, utilizing recognizable design cues like long, low stance and shark nose.
In 2014, the BMW Vision Future Luxury acted as a prophecy for what the next phase of premium automotive could hold. Fusing modern and ultramodern, the BMW Vision Future Luxury incorporates well-known BMW brand DNA with future-thinking design and technology. This sent a clear message to the masses gathered on the Concept Lawn: Wherever the future leads, BMW will be at the front of the pack.
Nowhere was BMW’s penchant for predictions more evident than at the 2013 Concours d’Elegance. This was the year in which the BMW Concept M4 Coupe debuted, draped in an “Aurum Dust” hue that emphasized its fit and finish to perfection. This paved the way for the BMW M4, which today is one of the most exhilarating cars on the road and is the truest iteration of the M concept.
If history is bound to repeat itself, then it’s a safe bet that BMW’s 2018 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance will be impactful and significant. Whether it’s a vision of the not-too-distant future or a projection for where luxury will be in a decade’s time, BMW’s Concept Lawn showing is likely to leave attendees speechless.
