The Chain of Safety!
by Bill Lorntson

At our monthly Honda Owners Workshop, I spend few minutes talking about the "chain of safety". That's the metaphor I like to use when talking about the safety features in your vehicle, because just like the links of a chain, all of the dozens (hundreds, actually) of safety features need to work together to keep you safe. And we know that any chain is only as strong as its weakest link.

These safety features are generally one of two types - passive and active.  Passive safety features are designed to protect you in the event of a crash; active safety features are designed to help you avoid a crash in the first place. Here are some examples:

Passive Safety Features
  • Seat belts
  • Air bags
  • Crumple zones
  • Safety glass
  • Padded dash
  • Breakaway mirror

 Active Safety Features

  • Antilock brakes (ABS)
  • Vehicle stability assist (VSA)
  • Daytime running lights
  • Side marker lights
  • Tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS)
  • High mount stop light
  • Tires
  • YOU - the driver!!

It boasts a more rigid unibody construction with independent front and rear suspension, which helps maximize ride quality, interior roominess and comfort and allows for innovations like the handy In-Bed Trunk® – a lockable storage trunk hidden beneath the bed.

Two is One Too Many
Sequels that thankfully never happened.

Photo: Two is One Too Many
Some of the worst films ever made are, in fact, sequels to some of the best films ever made. While some have gotten it right (Godfather II, anyone?), many more have left people longing for the originals. Luckily, some studio executives had the wherewithal to put the kibosh on these prospective sequels.

Car Care: Using Genuine Replacement Parts
The right part makes all the difference.

Photo: Using Genuine Replacement Parts
It takes hundreds of thousands of man-hours and several years of design, engineering and testing work to bring a new car, truck, SUV or crossover to the market. With so much work going into developing and integrating every component of a new vehicle, and as one of the most expensive pieces of equipment most people own, it really doesn’t make sense to install replacement parts of dubious origin.
