The "Best" Tablet PCs
The "Best" for you is based on how you will use your Tablet PC
http://www.infocater.com/tabletpc_chart....
by Geoff Palmer
There are many Tablet PCs on the market today. Choosing the model to best meet your needs is not as difficult as it seems. We have supplied hundreds of Tablet PCs to customers in all walks of life. Here are some things to consider: Screen size: A 12" screen makes a huge difference. The screen area is far bigger than the 10" models. This enables you to write into the Journal application on a screen that is about the same size as a standard 8.5" x 11" yellow pad (it even looks like a yellow pad). When reading documents, ebooks, or PDF files I recommend that you switch to portrait mode and use the "up" and "down" buttons to scroll through the document.
Convenience of a "Convertible"
If you are replacing a notebook computer the "convertible" Toshiba Portege 3500 Tablet PC probably makes the most sense. It is a true notebook computer that also "converts" to a "slate" form factor. You can flip the screen between "slate" and "notebook" mode with ease, and it automatically rotates the view from portrait to landscape! It is the fastest Tablet PC available, with a 1.33 GHz processor, offers up to 1GB of memory, and a 40 or 60 GB disk. All this in a package that weighs 4 pounds (likely less than your current notebook!) There are slots galore - PC Card, Compact Flash (CF) and Secure Digital (SD), built in 802.11b as well as two USB 2.0 connectors, network jack, modem jack, VGA, and more. It's my personal choice and is ideal for anyone who needs a tablet...except for some vertical markets such as healthcare where a slate style may make more sense. The Acer TravelMate TMC104 series is also a convertible model. The Acer has a 10" screen and weighs only 3 pounds. If weight is a factor then the Acer may be the best model for you.
Advantages of a "Slate"
Why would you want a "slate" style Tablet PC? For vertical markets such as healthcare, inspection, and some other industries a "slate" style Tablet PC such as the Motion M1200 is more convenient and weighs less. This is important if you spend most of your time standing when using your tablet. The Motion offers a 12" screen and still only weighs 3 pounds. When you go back to your desk you can use as a slate or place in the desktop dock to charge the battery and connect to pereipherals such as an external DVD-CD/RW, keyboard and mouse. Although it is lighter than the Toshiba Convertible, it is not as powerful as far as processor speed. In most cases the processor speed does not make a difference for most users. This is true if you are filling out forms or running software that is not too demanding, such as Word, Excel or PowerPoint from the Microsoft Office suite. If you are doing heavy duty tasks that need more processing power the Toshiba may make the most sense
