Due to customer requirements, a contract packager needed to upgrade its product coding solution to deliver better print quality to meet their customer’s demand for improved product traceability. In addition, the Packager needed a solution that could stand up to the cold temperatures and multiple wash downs associated with packaging chicken products.

The Packager’s existing coding solution used Hot Stamp technology to imprint product codes on package film prior to entering the vertical form, fill and seal phase of the packaging process. A final requirement of the new solution would be the need to quickly change code data because the end customer operates several brands.

With these requirements in mind the ID Technology team returned to the Packager with a recommendation to upgrade to Thermal Transfer Overprinter technology. The IDT specialists spec’ed an Intermittent Overprinter because of its ability to deliver high quality imprints up to 53 MM X 55 MM at speeds up to 600 mm per second. With the addition of a Harsh Environment Unicontroller, the coder easily stands up to the extreme cold temperatures experienced in the plant. Finally, the IM Overprinter features a quick disconnect mounting system that allows the Overprinter to be removed from the PacMac 9100 Series vertical form, fill and seal packaging machine prior to nightly wash downs.

Not only was this the right solution, but because of ID Technology’s nationwide sales and service network, IDT was also able to deliver and install the Overprinter system faster than the competition.
