As IDF advances its Insurers Are Not Doctors initiative in opposition to Coventry Health Care’s restrictive single Ig product formulary, it is good to know that we are not alone! The primary immunodeficiency community is picking up support from other patient organizations and providers for its efforts.
In the short time since IDF launched Insurers Are Not Doctors, 13 patient and provider organizations have expressed their support for this initiative. Provider organizations, Clinical Immunology Society and the Pennsylvania Allergy and Asthma Association have sent IDF letters of support. Patient groups, including the Alpha-1 Association, Alpha-1 Foundation, American Plasma Users Coalition (A-PLUS), Global Healthy Living Foundation, Guillain-Barré Syndrome / Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy Foundation International (GBS/CIDP), Hemophilia Federation of America, Jeffrey Modell Foundation, National Hemophilia Foundation, Neuropathy Action Foundation, Patient Services Inc. (PSI), and Platelet Disorder Support Association have all gladly gone on record opposing Coventry’s dangerous policy. They realize that they could be the next rare and chronic disease target.
We welcome support from all organizations who believe that insurance companies should not adopt policies that endanger the health and lives of patients – especially those with rare and chronic diseases!
