President’s Message
|
A Message from IADR President, Deborah Greenspan
If it is true that an organization is as young as the spirit and energy of its members, then the IADR is in wonderful shape. The members and guests in New Orleans, March 21-24, 2007, presented a wonderful microcosm of science related to the oral cavity in health and disease. Energy, creativity, excitement, and the love of science abounded. For me personally, each meeting of our Association is a reaffirmation of why I chose this field, and I hope that those of you who were able to attend felt the same. This success lies with the dedicated work of those in the Central Office, under the direction of Executive Director Christopher Fox, and the collective leadership, wisdom, and insight of the IADR Board of Directors (Stephen Bayne, Immediate Past President; Bob Ten Cate, President-elect; David Williams, Vice-president; Angus Walls, Treasurer; Tony Smith, Editor; Jukka Meurman, Richard Ellen, José Luiz Lage-Marques, Yoshimitsu Abiko, and Ahmed Ogwell, Regional Board Members), and all the hard-working Committee members. Needless to say, we also recognize with gratitude our close partnership with the AADR leadership and with our friends in the corporate sector. Read more. |

With a total registration of 4,632 people from 61 countries, the 85th General Session & Exhibition of the IADR in New Orleans, LA, USA, joins the ranks of successful IADR meetings.
New Orleans was also the 36th Annual Meeting of the American Association for Dental Research (AADR) and the 31st Annual Meeting of the Canadian Association for Dental Research (CADR).
In New Orleans, anyone attending the meeting could choose from among 3,074 abstracts (592 orals, including 28 Late-breaking News abstracts; 2406 posters, including 8 Late-breaking News abstracts), eight Hands-on Workshops, 21 Symposia, 28 Lunch & Learning speakers, 16 Keynote Addresses, two Distinguished Lecture speakers (Susan Fisher, Professor, University of California, San Francisco, “Human Embryonic Stem Cells: The Time is Now”; and Karen A. Holbrook, President, The Ohio State University, “Global Perspectives on Health Science Institutions and Research”), and a special NIDCR State-of-the-Institute address presented by NIDCR Director Larry Tabak. Due to high interest from the research community, IADR recorded Dr. Tabak’s presentation and it is available for viewing on the IADR Web site. (visit http://events.streamlogics.net/avwtelav/iadr/apr03-07/index.asp).
For the second consecutive year, this year’s meeting featured three sessions of “Late-breaking News”, where abstracts reporting on findings since the original deadline were presented (but not included on the CD-ROM of abstracts or in the printed program). These sessions were very well-received.
Also featured were 100 exhibit booths (representing 46 corporate exhibitors and 26 educational institutions and other organizations), Group business meetings and receptions, and the presentation of many awards and recognitions. Read more. |

IADR Regional Structure
|
The IADR Board presented to Council the results of an 18-month long strategic planning process working with consultants to carefully consider future options toward our global missions. While many strengths of IADR were identified, one very important potential barrier to future growth was a lack of any formal relationship to date between the developing Federations and the IADR. Despite the strong encouragement of Federation activities, there is no global coordination of the Federation meetings or official mechanisms to provide financial support for regional development or for future Federation meetings. In addition, the IADR Board recognized the great opportunity for Federations to move beyond just meetings, into research advocacy, research capacity building, and others. To remove the barriers and complement the existing IADR structure, an IADR Regional Structure was proposed. In brief, the Federations would evolve into Regions, which would have a much tighter logistic and financial relationship with the IADR Central Office. The concept of “regions” already exists within IADR as we have Regional Board Members and the Regional Development Program. The first step to realize the benefits of this structure is for the membership to approve a Constitutional Amendment that will simply allow for the evolution of Federations into Regions. If approved, an Implementation Task Force, which has already been identified, will report on the specific logistic details at the 2009 General Session in Toronto. Further information will be shared with the Membership throughout the year. |
