Scary New Frontiers in Virus Development
A new generation of hacker tools have started showing up that are reminiscence of the cloaked Romulan star ships of the early Star Trek episodes. These new tools allow a virus or malware to hide from the computer’s operating system by bypassing the computer’s directories, registry and port scans.
While Cebic technicians have developed a way to remove the cloaking software without reinstalling the operating system, it’s very difficult to know that the computer is infected and has a problem.
“Hackers are coming up with new things all the time,” explained Johan Hybinette, Cebic’s Chief Technology Officer. “Businesses have to realize that they can’t just buy a firewall and think they are protected. “The number one rule to minimize the risk of contacting malware is don’t go to inappropriate sites,” explains Beate Hybinette. “Gambling, music, gamer and porno sites are primary sources of viruses. Big companies have recognized the danger of these sites and are continually tightening their internet policies to prohibit non-business surfing. Increasingly, if you don’t need internet access as part of your job, you don’t have access at the major corporations. But smaller businesses have been hesitant to restrict employees’ internet use.”

Phishing is Getting More Realistic
How long until you get hooked by phishing?
Early emails that sought to trick recipients into revealing sensitive financial data, such as credit cards, bank accounts, PIN numbers and access codes, were relatively simple and often gave themselves away with awkward wording and typos. Today’s phishing emails are much more sophisticated, typically using graphics and links that appear on the host site of the firm the email pretents is sending the message. A increasingly common ploy is to imply that you have won a prize, or qualify for a very attractive offer.
Citing reports from the Anti-Phishing Working Group (APWG) that indicate a 100 percent increase in the number of phishing sites between September and October 2004, Paul Henry, a senior vice president at CyberGuard, states, "Between 80 and 100 new phishing Web sites are starting up daily. Scammers are getting much more sophisticated and they are harder for a user to detect."
Before you answer any emails that appear to asking you to provide, confirm, or verify sensitive information, ask yourself: 1) is this how the firm typically communicates with me, 2) is the URL or senders address (if visible) something I recognize, and 3) do I really qualify for the offer being made?
