Pop-up toolbar spreads via IE flaws

Watch out for the zero-day java exploit that affects Microsoft explorer! A zero-day exploit is an exploit that has not been fixed yet. Spammers are using the exploit to install search bars into explorer and producing annoying spam popups. These toolbars are very hard to remove and they entangle and hide themselves through many places in the registry files. They are also not detected when virus or IDS (Intrusion Detection) software is installed. For more info see:

The software program could be anything from a spam ad campaign to a search bar or a virus.

Unlike email attachment viruses which must be opened, the computer user would need to do nothing more than access a Java script-infected site to download the virus.

Waffensen, Germany

Where are computer viruses originating? The recent arrest of the author of the initial Sasser virus offers some clues. German police arrested an 18-year-old programmer from Lower Saxony in Germany, who admitted to writing the Sasser computer worm. The arrest came as a result of a bounty program offered by Microsoft and other software manufacturers.

Passwords Are Your First Line of Defense

When it comes to protecting your computer system, a good password is essential. Setting an effective password comes down to protecting yourself from two different attackers. The first is an outsider running password-cracking software against your system. The second is an insider who knows you and facts about you that might have been used in establishing your password.

The following are some basic guidelines for passwords that are more difficult to crack:
