E-Waste: A Burgeoning Problem for the New Millennium
The concept was ideal. Modern advances in technology would accelerate processes in the workplace, increasing productivity by making tasks easier for personnel. It would also contribute to the conservation of the environment by cutting down on paper waste. Businesses embraced technology; no more wasted storage space and no more reams of paper were necessary. Technology had made us more productive and alleviated the guilt businesses felt in association with environmental waste.

According to CNET News, the Alpha chip will be completely phased out by 2004. Although the Alpha chip was once considered an example of state-of-the-art technology, its life cycle is near completion. Compaq decided it was too costly to develop future Alpha processor designs and also thought the chip was “running out of steam.” Today, Alpha replacement parts are increasingly difficult to find, which makes repairs slow and extremely complicated. In the near future, it will be impossible to repair Alpha CPUs.
