Shows Aboard New Carnival Legend Continue Tradition of Unforgettable Entertainment
Two brand new original Las Vegas-style revues - "Jazz Hot" and "Take II" - along with a tribute to Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr. by Carnival's own Christopher Alan Graves - will be featured aboard the new 88,500-ton Carnival Legend, Carnival Cruise Lines' newest "Fun Ship" scheduled to enter service August 24.
The three productions take center stage in Follies, a spectacular, three-deck-high show lounge that recalls the great movie palaces of yesteryear. In addition to engaging interiors, comfortable seating and optimum sight lines, the expansive 1,500-seat theater will feature the latest entertainment technology, including a multi-million-dollar computerized sound and lighting system, two high-watt laser banks, a revolving stage and retractable orchestra pit.
The first show, "Jazz Hot," like the name implies, takes its cue from the famous singers and musicians who have contributed to the popular musical genre, often referred to as the only true original American art form.
A harmonizing quartet puts their unmistakable stamp on a variety of jazz classics, which range from such sultry, torch songs as "Birth of the Blues" to upbeat, toe-tapping tunes, including "Ain't Necessarily So" and "It Don't Mean a Thing." Big band-era numbers and interpretations of songs by Miles Davis and other contemporary jazz artists are also showcased.
The diverse musical numbers are enhanced by a creative set featuring oversized musical instruments - saxophones, trumpets, trombones, pianos and the like - all adding up to a "larger-than-life" musical extravaganza.
The second show, "Take II," is a stylish tribute to Hollywood with adaptations of some of Tinseltown's most famous movie scenes. Making maximum use of the Carnival Legend's talented singers and dancers, "Take II" features a realistic "movie studio set" that serves as the backdrop for various film genres, from 1950s-style "beach" movies to action flicks and romantic comedies. Visits to Austin Powers' "bachelor pad," and Emerald City from "The Wiz" fame, along with an homage to one of the world's most popular cartoon characters, the "Pink Panther," in which dancers playfully interact with the animation legend, are also showcased. "Singin' with the Band" is Christopher Alan Graves' salute to two of the world's most beloved entertainers - Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr. Accompanied by a cast of talented back-up singers, dancers and musicians, along with a set resembling the legendary Cotton Club, Graves performs tunes from the singers' vast library of classics, including "Fly Me to the Moon," "My Way" and "The Candyman." At one point, during "Mr. Bojangles," Graves even appears to "dance" with Shirley Temple and "Mr. Bojangles" himself, Bill Robinson, with the help of state-of-the-art video projection technology.
Carnival Legend is set to debut Aug. 24 with a 12-day Northern European voyage round-trip from Harwich (near London), followed by a 15-day transatlantic crossing departing Harwich Sept. 5 and arriving New York Sept. 20.
From New York, the ship will operate two- and three-day cruises-to-nowhere and 11-day Canada/New England sailings then sail on six-day Bermuda cruises from Baltimore and Philadelphia in October. Carnival Legend will then reposition to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., to sail on a two-day cruise-to-nowhere then operate "exotic" eight-day Caribbean voyages from that port Nov. 10 - April 19, 2003.
Following these sailings, the ship will launch a one-of-a-kind eight-day Caribbean cruise program from New York May 13, 2003.
