The Mercedes-Benz Compact GLK-Class Is Coming to America
Look for the 2010 model early in 2009.

Mercedes-Benz is thinking small, at least “smaller,” with the introduction of the 2010 GLK compact premium SUV. The 2010 GLK-Class will be produced exclusively at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Bremen, Germany. It arrives stateside in January.

Mercedes-Benz believes in the SUV and believes it has just the right size for most owners. The German automaker believes a compact luxury SUV with crossover underpinnings will meet the needs of American families while respecting their attitudes toward expensive fuel. The GLK has great surface appeal with its aggressive styling (dig that huge grille!) and a driving personality to match.

The five-passenger GLK will be initially offered as the GLK350 with a 3.5-liter V6. The standard driveline will be Mercedes’ 4Matic full-time all-wheel drive system. Reportedly, the GLK will be available with the latest version of the Mercedes-Benz COMAND (COckpit Management And Navigation Device) APS system. COMAND APS is the hub of control for nearly all of the navigation, entertainment and communication electronics on the vehicle.

Powered by the 268-hp, 3.5-liter V6 engine, the 2010 GLK350 will arrive in both 4MATIC and two-wheel drive trim levels. Indications are Mercedes-Benz intends to offer a BlueEFFICIENCY model in the spring of 2009 – the GLK 220 CDI featuring a new four-cylinder diesel engine.

Mercedes-Benz Design Chief Professor Peter Pfeiffer tied the GLK to the classic G-Wagen, short for Geländewagen (or cross-country vehicle), a rugged, but luxurious four-wheel drive vehicle that has reached “cult” status worldwide. "With the G-Class, we created a style icon that has been a benchmark in SUV design for the past 30 years. Combining this bold concept with the latest Mercedes-Benz design idiom makes the GLK a vehicle of genuine character."

Thanks to its Agility Control chassis, the GLK boasts excellent handling and safety combined with outstanding driving comfort. In addition, the model’s variable 4MATIC all-wheel drive system and electronic stability control ensure perfect on-road performance, and reliability in off-road applications.

That’s what we have on the 2010 GLK at this writing, but keep your eyes open because we will be keeping you posted about this exciting new entry in the heated crossover competition for “King of SUV Hill.”
