Do Houston Christians Care Who Governs the City?
by Dave Welch

Does it matter whether those seeking office hold to Biblical standards in their lives, political views and governing decisions?

EVERY Christian will vote – either by absence or by participation – however within participation will your vote be dictated by adherence to God’s priorities, or yours?

Beginning with early voting on October 19 through the General Election on November 3, citizens of the city of Houston will have a particularly weighty duty of choosing a new mayor and several city council members.  Polls show that most voters are still undecided and it is critical that every Biblically grounded pastor and believer get informed and get to the polls.

No excuses.  Our loved ones are overseas in harm’s way to defend our freedoms; the least we can do is get off our blessed assurance and choose the best leaders available to protect them here.

HAPC is launching our FaithVotes 2009 voter mobilization project with other partner ministries to support and equip hundreds of churches executing an effective plan to maximize the turnout of informed voters.  Non-partisan voter guides, PowerPoint slides, posters, automated call scripts, Public Service Announcements for radio and other resources will be available by October 15 at www.faithvotes.org.

Call our office at 832-688-9166, email us at info@uspastorcouncil.org, go to www.uspastorcouncil.org now AND www.faithvotes.org after October 15  to get all the information you need to reach toward 100 percent registered, 100 percent voting – it is our joy and our duty.

Houston is joining over 200 cities across America in the "40 Days for Life" campaign, beginning on September 23 and ending on November 1, 2009.  "40 Days for Life" is a focused pro-life campaign with a vision to access God's power through prayer, fasting, and peaceful vigil to end abortion in America.

The mission of the campaign is to bring together the body of Christ in a spirit of unity during a focused 40 day campaign of prayer, fasting, and peaceful activism, with the purpose of repentance, to seek God's favor to turn hearts and minds from a culture of death to a culture of life, thus bringing an end to abortion in America.

We are encouraging pastors and churches in the Houston area to sign up to pray, either individually or as a group, during these 40 days.

Individuals or groups can sign up to pray at any of the following locations:

A casino coming to your neighborhood?

by Dave Welch, USPC Executive Director

September 22, 2009

According to a Wall Street Journal article, the Obama administration, ever eager to expand government revenues, is considering changing existing federal parameters for tribal casino gambling. Both cash-strapped tribes and government entities view casinos as money sources, usually ignoring both economic facts and sociological "collateral damage."

While current restrictions require that casinos be built on or within "commuting distance" of actual reservation lands (note – on any land that the tribe can lease or purchase!), a push is on to allow them to build anywhere, including your downtown.

The primary rationale of expanding casino gambling on and off tribal reservations to create economic benefit for tribes and state governments has proven to be a pipe dream. The moral, criminal and family-related issues aside, it simply and literally does not add up.

Professor John Warren Kindt, professor of business administration at the University of Illinois and the foremost researcher on the economic impact of gambling, has proven for years that the direct costs of casino expansion outweigh any revenue increases by a two-to-one margin...
