Danny Michael on New Schoeps Shotgun Mic

We asked Danny Michael to give us his impression of the new Schoeps CMIT 5U shot gun. Here’s what he had to say:

I snatched up the new Schoeps CMIT 5U shotgun mic from Gotham Sound’s AES both to use on my latest project, Super Ex-Girlfriend starring Uma Thurman and Luke Wilson. I've never found it very meaningful to stand around with a couple of microphones to learn how they sound as opposed to putting them in front of actors in real live settings. So there we were on day one trying it out in an alley in Tribeca and the next day a restaurant interior. What we found is that it sounds like a Schoeps hypercardioid but with a bit more reach. This is not like a Neumann KM82 or Sennheiser 816 or even an MKH 70. This is a short shotgun which weighs only 3 1/8 ounces!, and has all the options you'd like right on the microphone body- a steep low cut (-18db @ 80Hz), a gradual low cut (-6db @ 300 Hz) and a presence boost (+5db @ 10KHz). These filters are selected with tiny buttons that light up to show the selected option and retain those settings even when the mic is disconnected from power.

Besides the fact that my boom person, Andy Schmetterling, can happily hold this 1/6 lb mic at the end of a long pole for extended periods of time without passing out, we really like the way it sounds. It's very even sounding, not too characteristic, and not flawed with a shotgun's usual tonal compromises. You can go from the 5U to any favorite Schoeps capsule without a startling difference in quality. And even though I've never been a fan of shotguns indoors this one helps you to get a little more bite without biting you back. Outdoors, in NYC, it is only a negligible difference from a Schoeps hypercardioid. This will not replace a large reach shotgun mic but using its presence boost switch does seem to help pull voices out of noisier environments.

I recommend the Schoeps CMIT 5U to anyone who uses Schoeps as their standard dialogue mics and would like the perfect complement to their mic selection.
