The Hyundai Sonata is one of the Hyundai brand’s highest achievements, and it has now been aptly recognized as such by the Automotive Science Group (ASG). This organization, one of the most highly respected in the automotive world, awarded different performance titles to not just one, but three separate versions of the brand’s flagship Sonata sedan. The Sonata Hybrid won “Best All-Around Performance,” the basic model of the Sonata won “Best Economic Performance,” and the Hyundai Sonata PHEV was chosen as one of the “Best 5 All-Around Performance” in its class.
The awards are part of ASG’s annual general performance review, referred to as the Automotive Performance Index. This index combines a collection of analyses, which take into account criteria of environmental, social and economic performance, plus cost of ownership over the first 6.5 years or 87,594 miles, whichever comes first. The entire review process is based on principles of “ecological economics,” where social, environmental and economic considerations are equally important in determining the value of the examined vehicles.
Winning such an illustrious series of awards obviously has Hyundai executives feeling very proud. Brandon Ramirez, senior group manager of product planning for Hyundai Motor America, said, “The recognition by ASG is a testament to Hyundai’s commitment to all aspects of performance and providing the best possible experience for our customers. Our high marks across these measures demonstrates our drive to do better, not just in one aspect but across the board.”
ASG praised the Hyundai Sonata in particular, putting it ahead of a pool of 106 other full-size sedan models. Furthermore, the group also praised the Hyundai family of vehicles in general, with ASG founding partner and managing director Colby Self saying, “In a highly competitive class, the Sonata is a stand out that provides fuel efficient technologies at a best in class value. Additionally, five Hyundai vehicles earned ASG’s Best 5 All-Around Performance honors, further reinforcing Hyundai’s position as a market leader.”
When it comes to vehicles that specialize in social, environmental and economic advantages, Hyundai is leading the pack, especially with a vehicle like the 2017 Hyundai Sonata in its lineup.
