Barbara Arnold Receives Three Awards
 
Barbara Arnold received two awards from the Society of Mining Engineers (SME) for her service in 2006: The Distinguished Member Award and the Coal & Energy Division Distinguished Service Award. The SME Distinguished Member Award, established in 1975, is presented to individuals who have demonstrated significant and sustained contributions to the minerals industry and to SME. The Coal & Energy Division Distinguished Service Award was established in 1989 and is presented to an individual for achievements in the coal mining industry.
 
Dr. Arnold was also presented with the 2007 Robert Stefanko Distinguished Achievement Award in Mineral Engineering from the Department of Energy and Geo-Environmental Engineering in the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences at Penn State for her achievements and leadership in enhancing the mineral engineering profession. The Stefanko Award was established by the Penn State Mineral Engineering faculty in 1992 to honor the memory of Robert Stefanko ’48, ’57, ’61, a professor who served with distinction, great productivity, and professionalism, and provided lasting benefits to his alma mater. , this award recognizes.
 
Barb received her B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. in Mineral Processing and Mining Engineering, specializing in coal froth flotation, fine particle processing, and coal petrology. Her research and development experience has included projects for government and industry funding agencies as well as private companies, and has covered the development of a coal cleaning simulator, coal handling, coal blending, coal cleaning characterizations, and flowsheet evaluations. Her project management experience has included the development and management of project budgets, project schedules, oversight of project personnel, and reporting functions.
 
Currently, she is president of PrepTech, Inc., located in Apollo, Pennsylvania. PrepTech offers engineering services to coal companies in the form of balanced flowsheets for preparation plants, bid specification packages, and preparation plant evaluations. In addition, PrepTech is the US representative for Multotec Process Equipment and PrepQuip, both from Spartan, Republic of South Africa. They offer cyclones, spirals, froth flotation columns, and filterpresses to the coal and mineral processing industry. PrepTech also represents CLI Corporation’s CLIMAXX magnetic separator.
 
Dr. Arnold is the author of over 50 publications, as well as numerous technical reports. She is active in SME’s Coal & Energy Division, serving as chairperson in 2003, and on many other committees for this division, as well as for the Mineral Processing Division. She received the J. W. Woomer Young Engineer Award, from the Coal Division in 1992, as a nominee of the Pittsburgh Section. In addition, she received the Henry DeWitt Smith Trust of AIME Scholarship for Graduate Studies in Mineral Engineering for 1985-1986. She serves on the editorial boards of Mining Engineering, Coal Preparation: A Multinational Journal; and The International Journal of Mineral Processing.
 
Barb is also very active with Penn State. She is a life member of the Alumni Association, former Alumni Council member, and member of the Presidents Club;  member of the Obelisk Society and former member and President of the alumni constituent society—GEMS, in the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences; and member of the New Kensington alumni society and advisory board. She is also a board member of the Mortar Board National Council and active in her community as well.
