An Alternative View of High-Speed Machining
At the top of the aerospace supply chain, there are aircraft manufacturers and larger suppliers with the investment power and the technology support to implement the very latest high-speed machining solutions. Advanced machines include 5-axis machining, high-speed spindles, NURBS interpolation, linear motor drive systems and the latest developments in tooling. Design and programming may be achieved through the newest integrated solid modeling CAD/CAM systems. However, the majority of machining in the aerospace industry is outsourced to small- to medium-size companies, which have more modest resources, both in the machine shop and the part programming engineering office.
