We thank you for a great 2004 and look forward to an even better 2005
A year end message from Douglas Peterson, VP, CNC Business

As I reflect on the past year, what stands out the most is the resilience and strength of our industry. After weathering several difficult years we finally started to see an up tick in our markets and we all rallied our resources to meet the resulting increase in business activity. Every opportunity I had to talk to customers this year was filled with excitement around meeting the challenge of increased demand. This excitement definitely set the tone for a great year. As our industry gathered at the various shows and events throughout the year, we all sensed the renewed energy.

GE Fanuc Named Top in Control Design 2004 Readers' Choice Award
with 61% of the votes as best choice in the "Controller, CNC" category

15,000 surveys were sent to Control Design subscribers (by Control Design) who "have authority to specify, recommend or purchase industrial automation and control products for industrial machines". Vendors, themselves, are not eligible to vote.

Criteria voted on were best technologies, service, and support.

We take pride in announcing GE Fanuc came out on top for the "Controller, CNC" category! For further details on the survey and the awards, please visit www.controldesign.com.

Product Offering Expanded through Alliance Programs
One stop shopping for our customer base

GE Fanuc is pleased to announce three new agreements in place by which our customers can gain direct access to a range of complimentary technologies to our current portfolio. These include:

· Axis and spindle motor couplings from Zero-Max – a premier coupling manufacturer
· AT553 linear scales from Mitutoyo - a market leader in measurement equipment
· PS and RS gearheads from Bayside – a leading innovator in the motion control industry

The alliance with Zero-Max enables us to offer a line of high performance, low inertia couplers pre-selected for our servo and spindle motors. The only selection requirement is the output shaft needed by the customer.

The absolute linear scales from Mitutoyo offer high accuracy, resolution and secure FANUC serial communication. The scales are available from 100mm to 2200mm.

Bayside is a premier manufacturer of helical gearheads and we are providing a pre-selected line of these gearheads for the servo motor series. By selecting the appropriate gearhead and adapter for the respective servo motor, the MTB or Retrofitter will only need to select the required output gear ratio.

Why are These Men Smiling?
Mark Brownhill, CNC Services Manager, talks about how maintenance is being transformed

"Balancing prevention vs. requirement means manufacturers must know exactly how much maintenance is necessary, what maintenance actually helps improve performance, and when to do it. A machine manual provides basic information on periodic maintenance, but an easy-to-implement Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) program optimizes the maintenance schedule for an individual machine based on real usage data. This unltimately reduces maintenance costs, decreases unnecessary maintenance downtime and boosts machine performance."

GE Fanuc’s NURBS Capability enables Application’s Success
Platform stability and international support infrastructure contribute to the selection of the 160i-MA control

Zeeko specialises in deterministic corrective polishing of lens and other precision optical components. The company has designed a range of unique 7-axis robotic arm machines encompassing many novel approaches to improve this technology. The machines are capable of producing accurate, non-directional surfaces with standard polishing slurries, and are far more productive than conventional polishing machines as a result of advanced programming developments. The high quality surface forms and textures are made possible by applying the NURBS capability of the GE Fanuc 160i–MA control that ensures non-stepped profiles across the work surface.

2005 Calendar of Events
GE Fanuc out and about meeting customers in 2005

Our main goal in 2005 is to be where you, our customers, are. Whether this means attending the same events you attend, or traveling to where you are located, we will be there to share with you manufacturing solutions to improve your plant floor efficiency. As a result, we will be exhibiting at several of the regional trade shows in addition to hosting half-day educational seminars in various locations where you can learn how Lean, Six Sigma, and OEE concepts and solutions can help you become a global competitor.
