Notes From the Cuff

Iowa has now evened the series with Penn State at 11-11, after wiping out a 10-4 lead the Lions had compiled in the last century. Each team has won 7 of 11 games in the opponents’ stadium. … Coach Kirk Ferentz, who ranks second to Joe Paterno in conference seniority with 11 years, has a 7-2 record against the Lions’ headmaster. Ferentz played football at Upper St. Clair High School, the alma mater of Sean Lee. He wanted to play for Penn State but was not recruited by Paterno, so he went to Connecticut and played in the Yankee Conference. His wife’s brother, Kevin Hart, was a linebacker for Penn State in 1976, and his father-in-law, Gerry Hart, played with Paterno at Brooklyn Prep. A nephew, Mike Hart, played for the Lions earlier this decade. … At least one Penn State alum should have enjoyed Saturday’s game. Paul Federici, a 1985 graduate, is Iowa’s director of football operations. … Penn State’s string of four consecutive wins in night games was broken. Overall, State has a 35-21 record in night games, going 7-7 at home, 17-7 on the road, 1-1 at neutral sites, and 10-6 in bowl games. … The Lions’ record in Big Ten openers slipped to 6-11. It was the second time they opened with Iowa, losing, 42-35, in overtime in 2002. … The Alumni Association provided 40,000 white shakers for the Whitehouse in the nation’s largest football facility. And the Association’s student membership—the Blue & White Society—sponsored a packed “Rally in the Valley” with the team, the cheerleaders, the Nittany Lion, the Blue Band and Coach Paterno in Rec Hall Friday night. … Penn State (6.7) and Iowa (12.0) entered the game ranking 1-2 in the Big Ten in scoring defense, but the Lions were first in total defense (212.3 ypg) and the Hawkeyes were third (303.3 ypg). … State’s Phi Beta Kappa long snapper Andrew Pitz, a first team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American in 2008, played his high school ball at Bettendorf, Iowa, and helped his team win the Class 4A state championship. His Bettendorf teammate, Pat Angerer, was Iowa’s leading tackler Saturday, bringing down 14 Lions from his middle linebacker position, in addition to picking off an interception and returning it 38 yards to set up the visitors’ final touchdown and forcing Evan Royster to fumble at the IA-18 to end Penn State’s last scoring threat. … Daryll Clark’s 198 passing yards moved him past Michael Robinson into 10th place on State’s all-time list. … The Lions continued to have trouble with their kicking teams. In addition to the blocked punt, the kickoff coverage team couldn’t stop the Hawks inside their 30-yard line, while the kick return team could average only 12.5 yards until Chaz Powell finally broke the last one for 36. … An even larger crowd than usual got to enjoy the Tailgreat in the Bryce Jordan Center because of the late kickoff and the rain, which drove them inside. … Next Friday and Saturday the undefeated women’s volleyball team will raise its latest Big Ten and National Championship banners before its games in Rec Hall. … Penn State, which has had 63 national championship varsity teams, will honor the latest ones at the next home game against Eastern Illinois on Oct. 10. Kickoff is at noon and will be broadcast by ESPN Classic.
