Notes from the Cuff
Penn State scored on its opening drive of each half for the first time this year and has now outscored its seven opponents, 71-7, in the second quarter and, 72-6, in the third. . . State’s record in Homecoming games is 63-20-5 (37-5 under Coach Paterno). . . Anthony Morelli posted his ninth 200-yard passing game to tie for fifth on State’s career chart and moved into sixth in career completions with 351. His 22 career touchdown tosses ties him with receiver coach Mike McQueary. . . Deon Butler caught his 12th career touchdown pass to move into 6th on the all-time Lion list. He is fourth in career receptions with 111 and eighth in receiving yardage with 1,708. . . The Penn State defense ranks fifth in scoring (12.7 points per game), seventh in total defense (264.3-yard average) and ninth in rushing (81.4 ypg). It has allowed only two touchdowns and two field goals in the last 10 quarters and only 12 TDs in the last 13 games. . . Sophomore defensive end Maurice Evans is fifth in the nation with seven sacks for 49 yards this season and leads the Lions with 14 tackles for 68 yards in losses. . . Sean Lee recorded his fifth consecutive double figure tackle game. . . Sophomore defensive tackle Jared Odrick broke a bone in his left hand, but says he can play with the injury. Sophomore defensive end Jerome Hayes left the game with a knee injury, the extent of which is unknown. Injured backup linebackers Dontey Brown and Navarro Bowman missed another game. . .Penn State has been whistled for the fewest penalties of any Big Ten team this fall. . . TV viewers got some beautiful aerial shots of Beaver Stadium from the Outback Blimp, which hovered over Happy Valley in the crisp autumn air. . .Young Wisconsin mentor Bret Bielema had won 17 of his 19 games as a head coach before Saturday’s contest. . .The Big Ten has the top three teams in average home attendance this fall in Michigan (110,360), Penn State (108,421) and Ohio State (104,844). . .The Blue Band’s national champion twirler, P.J. Maierhofer, and former national champion Bobbie Jo Solomon (1999-2004) performed a fascinating twirling duet at Tailgreat and at halftime. Solomon was also surprised at the end of the Alumni Band show when her boyfriend appeared in the end zone and offered her an engagement ring.
