AWAY GAME PEP RALLIES
Pre-game pep rallies are sponsored by the Penn State Alumni Association and Nittany Lion Club at all away game sites. President Graham Spanier, Alumni Director Roger Williams, the cheerleaders, Nittany Lion mascot and Pep Band will help Penn State fans show their spirit. Admission is free and refreshments will be provided.
At the Minnesota game on Oct. 2 the location will be in the Great Hall in Coffman Memorial Union, 300 Washington Ave. SE in Minneapolis.
At the Ohio State game on Oct. 30 the location will be at the Fawcett Conference Center, 2400 Olentangy River Road, about four blocks northwest of Ohio Stadium.
COACHES IN MONROEVILLE OCT. 15
Penn State football Coach Joe Paterno will be joined by men’s basketball coach Ed DeChellis, women’s basketball coach Rene Portland and Athletic Director Tim Curley at a Penn State Athletics Luncheon at the Westin Convention Center-Pittsburgh on Friday, Oct. 15.
Penn State cheerleaders and the Nittany Lion mascot will also appear at the luncheon, which is presented by the Day Auto Group in conjunction with the Monroeville Area Chamber of Commerce from noon to 1:30 p.m. There will also be a silent auction from 11 a.m. to noon.

HUDDLE WITH THE FACULTY
The Alumni Association’s “Huddle with the Faculty” series of free lectures by distinguished professors takes place in the Nittany Lion Inn each Saturday before a home football game.
The next lecture will be Oct. 9 at 10 a.m., when Dr. Darrell G. Kirch, Senior Vice President for Health Affairs and Dean of the College of Medicine, will speak about medical breakthroughs and their impact on the quality of life in a lecture titled, “Medical Miracles and Your Personal Financial Health: the Promise and Threat of Medicine in the Future.”
Huddles are a free outreach program of the Penn State Alumni Association, The Nittany Lion Inn and the Penn State Bookstore.
BASKETBALL TIP-OFF TOUR
The Penn State Basketball Tip-off Tour with men’s coach Ed DeChellis, women’s coach Rene Portland and Alumni Association Executive Director Roger Williams will begin in Harrisburg on Tuesday, Oct. 12 with a reception from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Harrisburg Hilton and Towers, 1 North Second St.
Attendees will get the inside scoop on what’s new with Penn State basketball and the Alumni Association and have a chance to socialize with other proud Penn State fans.
The Tour will reach Clearfield on Wednesday, Oct. 20 for a reception from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Days Inn on Route 879 near I-80 exit 120.
On Tuesday, Oct. 26 the tour will be in Huntingdon at a reception from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Days Inn on Route 22 at South Fourth St.
Fans in the Lewistown area can see the Tour on Thursday, Oct. 28 at a reception from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Clarion Inn, 13015 Ferguson Valley Road in Burnham.
On Monday, Nov. 1 the tour will be at the Casino at Lakemont Park in Altoona for a reception from 7 to 9 p.m.
Finally, the first annual Basketball Eve and Pep Rally will be held in the Bryce Jordan Center on Nov. 15.

TAILGATE COMPETITION
Competition among tailgaters for Most PSU Spirit, Best Theme, and Largest Tailgate will be held at the Purdue game under the sponsorship of the Student Homecoming Committee.
Persons interested in competing must register online. A registration fee of $5 will be collected and the deadline for signing up is Oct. 2. Competing tailgates must be set up by 12:30 p.m.
A roving film crew will visit each competing tailgate and take pictures that will be displayed at the Ice Cream Social at the Hintz Family Alumni Center from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 22. Attendees will have an opportunity to vote, and the winners will receive a banner, an engraved plaque, a Penn State prize package and a feature on the jumbotron during halftime of the Homecoming game. Questions should be directed to Homecoming Alumni Relations Chair Julie Noblick.
HOMECOMING SCHEDULE
All alumni are invited to the Alumni Association Homecoming Tent before and after the football game against Wisconsin on Oct. 4. The tent will be located along Curtin Rd. outside Gate B at the Northeast corner of the Bryce Jordan Center. Snacks, beverages and Class Year buttons will be available for three hours before kickoff and two hours after the end of the game. Music will be provided by the Deacons of Dixieland and cameo appearances by Alumni Blue Band members will be made from 10:20 to 10:40 a.m. and 10:55 to 11:10 a.m. Annual and Life Memberships will be available at the Membership Table.

BLUE BAND CAMPAIGN
The Alumni Association is assisting the campaign for the new Blue Band Building, which will be dedicated on Homecoming weekend. The beautiful new facility allows the Blue Band to practice in all kinds of weather and to store their instruments between practices and performances.
The Association has agreed to match on a one-to-two basis all contributions to the Blue Band campaign until the million-dollar goal is reached. The Association’s contribution will come from its Margin of Excellence Fund in appreciation for the excellence of the Blue Band in providing outstanding musical performances and in promoting school spirit and tradition for more than a century.
Contributions to Penn State can be designated for the Blue Band Building Campaign and sent to the Development Office, One Old Main, University Park, PA 16802. Naming opportunities are available for donors of $1,000 or more.
EVENT AT OHIO STATE
The Penn State Chapter of Central Ohio will hold a dinner, silent auction and pep rally the night before the Ohio State football game on Friday, Oct. 29 at Villa Milano in Columbus. A cash bar will open at 6 p.m. followed by dinner at 7 p.m. and a pep rally with the cheerleaders, Nittany Lion mascot and a talk by Pittsburgh Tribune Review writer Rob Biertempfel ’87. Cost is $30 per person or $55 per couple.

PARENTS & FAMILIES WEEKEND
The Sesquicentennial Games marking the 150th anniversary of Penn State’s founding will be a highlight of the annual Parents and Families Weekend sponsored by the Alumni Association and the Division of Student Affairs Oct. 1-3.
Alumni can form teams of 10 to compete in numerous events such as punt, pass & kick, basketball and soccer shootouts, fly casting, ultimate Frisbee, whiffle ball, relays, academic bowl, and others. Participants may register online.
Other activities during the weekend will include campus tours, open houses, ice cream socials, Old Main bell tower tours, a student talent show called Synergy, fireworks and the Melissa Heidenreich 5K Moxie-thon.
The 3.1-mile race against leukemia will begin at 10 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 3 at the Intramural Building on Curtain Road near the Bryce Jordan Center. Runners, joggers and walkers can sign up for $16 (pre-registration) or $18 on race day. Checks should be made payable to Penn State and sent to Lion Ambassadors, Hintz Family Alumni Center, University Park, PA 16802. All proceeds go to the Leukemia and Lymphona Society of America to help fund leukemia research at Penn State in honor of Melissa Heydenreich ’87, a Lion Ambassador, Renaissance Scholar, and member of Lion’s Paw and Parmi Nous, who died of leukemia in 1997.

A CD, paperback book and photo annual of interest to Penn State sports fans have hit the shops in time for the fall season.
The multimedia CD, titled The Spirit of a Penn State Football Weekend, features an on-field video and a photo gallery of over 100 pictures of football action, fans, tailgating, the Nittany Lion, cheerleaders and Blue Band honoring the spirit and traditions of a football weekend in Happy Valley. The Penn State Football Button Book, written by alumni brothers Martin and Russell Ford, shows every single button produced during the past 32 years by Citizen’s Bank and previous bank sponsors for Nittany Lion games. The authors examine the history, highlights and national championships under Coach Joe Paterno and rank their top 100 games during the button era, summarizing each contest, its most memorable moments, key statistics and the button.

NITTANY LION INN MEMORIES?
The Nittany Lion Inn is planning to publish a book to commemorate its 75 years of hospitality at Penn State and is seeking anecdotes and photos from guests who have savored its dining, lodging, and special events since its opening in 1931. Memories should be kept to 500 words or less and stories are subject to editing without review. Photos may be black-and-white or color up to 8x10 in size and will be kept unless return is requested. CIVIL WAR TOUR
Mosby’s Confederacy: Following the Gray Ghost is the title of the 12th annual fall Alumni Civil War Battlefield Tour Oct. 14-17 in Dulles, VA. Participants in the Alumni Outreach program will spend three days in the classroom and in the field with noted Civil War historians studying the complexities of cavalry operations and the legendary John Singleton Mosby. The program is led by military historian and award-winning author Dr. Carol Reardon with Horace Mewborn, Robert E. O’Neill and alumnus Jeffry Wert ’76.
