VOLUME 67 ISSUE 3   Penn State vs. UCF   November 24, 2009
Notes from the Cuff

Penn State has won 39 of 49 non-conference games since starting to play in the Big Ten in 1993 . . . It’s record against current members of the Mid American Conference moved up to 17-2 all time and 14-1 under Joe Paterno . . . The six turnovers were the most committed by Penn State since its 42-21 loss at Alabama in 1982. The safety given up by Central Florida was the first given to the Lions, since Iowa snapped a punt through the end zone in 2001 . . . Penn State’s offense ripped off 12 scrimmage plays for 20 yards or more, giving them 20 through the first three games, compared to 37 for the whole 2003 season. Five of the big gainers were runs --by Hunt (3), Scott and Gasparato -- and seven were passes (six by Mills and one by Robinson) . . . It’s been 24 years since the Lions last committed 11 turnovers in two games. In 1980, they committed seven at home against Nebraska and then five more at Missouri . . . Zack Mills holds Penn State career records in total offense, passing yardage, completions, attempts, and total plays participated in; and single game marks for total offense and passing yardage . . . His career marks will obviously continue to grow with each game . . . Kicker Robbie Gould passed Curt Warner (1979-82) to move into 9th place on State’s all-time scoring chart with 201 points. He is just three points behind Ki-Jana Carter’s 8th place total . . . Mike Gasparato’s 22-yard touchdown was the longest run of his career, and Paul Jefferson’s 20-yard reception was his career-long. Dan Connor’s interception was the first of his career. Matt Rice posted a career-high seven tackles . . . Alex Haynes, the senior tailback, who is second on UCF’s all-time rushing chart with 2,750 yards and had gained 83 yards on 21 carries against the Lions two years ago, was held to just 55 yards on the same number of carries this time . . . Saturday’s battle matched two teams with identical 3-9 records in 2003. UCF is winless this year, having dropped a 34-6 verdict at Wisconsin and a 45-20 decision to West Virginia . . . Despite the damp and slippery turf at noon time, Drum Major Kevin Rudy got the fans revved up by strutting through Penn State’s national champion majorettes to hit both of his front flips . . . The Nittany Lion Accuweather vane on top of the south end zone stands showed winds blowing out of the north-northeast at about 20 miles per hour, but the Blue Band flags on the field were flying in the opposite direction because of the way the winds swirl inside the stadium . . . A check for $75,000 was presented to Penn State’s Hershey Medical Center for melanoma research by the Foreman Foundation, founded by Phillip Foreman, a classmate of former Nittany Lion punter John Bruno, who died of skin cancer in April 1992.
