"School Libraries: Quietly Making a Difference"
Research Links Strong Library Programs to Higher Reading Scores

Recent research has shown a link between strong library programs and higher reading scores, according to an article in the April issue of District Administration magazine. "The school library is one of the few factors whose contribution to academic achievement has been documented empirically," said researcher Keith Curry Lance speaking at the White House Conference on School Libraries in 2002.

But a school library crammed to the ceiling with books, computers and Internet access is just the beginning when it comes to improving student performance. The best library program shares two key assets. The first asset is a certified library media specialist whose technical skills are complemented by an enterprising attitude. What's the second key asset needed for the best library program? Find out by clicking on the FULL STORY link below.

Using No Child Left Behind Funds to Create a Strong Library
No Child Left Behind

Think that a web-based, standards-friendly library is out of financial reach for your school or district? Think again! Despite today's tough economic climate, some schools and districts are using federal funds to support the purchase of Follett Software products to improve access to quality library resources and match their resources to state standards.

The reauthorized Elementary and Secondary Education Act - better known as No Child Left Behind (NCLB) - makes billions of dollars in new funding available to schools. The challenge is securing the funding because NCLB places strict requirements on states, districts and schools to meet academic achievement standards. The purchase of some Follett Software solutions is an ideal application of these funds.

Read more about NCLB programs and the Follett Software products that correspond with select NCLB goals by clicking on the FULL STORY link below.

Easy-To-Use Destiny™ Extends Services While Reducing Costs

Technology Coordinators:
Can You Afford Not to Centralize?

If your school or district is like most, you've thought about centralizing your library management system-combining all circulation, cataloging, searching, reporting and management in one system installed at the district, and accessed through any workstation with a web browser.

Some districts wonder whether their budgets allow them to centralize. But centralizing library management can actually help solve some budget problems you are facing now. Learn how centralizing can save thousands of dollars!

The Challenge:
Orange County Schools in Hillsborough, North Carolina was faced with adding a new 1,200-student high school to an outdated and unpopular site-based library solution. They went looking for a centralized, district wide-solution with these goals in mind:

  • Replace outdated servers used at each site
  • Find a more cost effective way to upgrade and extend services to new sites
  • Provide students, librarians and teachers with a stable and reliable solution

Learn how Destiny™ centralized library management system helped the district reduced costs and added a new high school without increasing staff or reducing services. Just click on the FULL STORY link below.
