An Interview with Assembly Member Lori Saldaña

Q: You’re chair of the Assembly Committee on Housing & Community Development this year.  What were some of your goals in the housing arena as chair of the committee and so far, do you feel progress has been made on them?  If so, how?

Haight Street Senior Housing: Preserving an Architectual Gem in an Evolving Neighborhood

A lack of affordable housing for the aging population in San Francisco, particularly in the central and western areas is a growing problem in the city.

To help address this concern, Citizens Housing Corporation has developed an adaptive reuse project that converted the historic and abandoned Third Church Christ Scientist building into Haight Street Senior Housing, a 40 unit affordable senior housing development in the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood.

The Altenheim Senior Apartments: The Restoration of a Community Treasure
The courtyard of Altenheim Senior Apartments. The Altenheim, meaning “home for the elderly” in German, was built in 1893 by a group of German settlers to house the aging members of their community.  After closing its doors in 2002 due to rising operational costs, the Altenheim Association – which managed the property – partnered with Citizens Housing Corporation to develop the historic site into affordable housing for low-income seniors.

Located in the Fruitvale/Dimond district of Oakland, Citizens Housing renovated the existing historic buildings and built new apartments in order to provide much-needed affordable housing in the area.  The first phase of the project was completed in Jan. 2007.
