Chicago, L.A. Add Ford Transit Connect Taxis
Modified vehicles run on compressed natural gas.

The next time you visit a major city, part of your travel may be powered by compressed natural gas (CNG). Chicago and Los Angeles recently joined a growing list of cities that use Ford Transit Connect Taxis fueled by CNG.
In Chicago, Taxi Medallion Management hopes to reduce its emissions by 25 percent by putting 12 CNG-powered taxis into service. Likewise, two cab companies in Los Angeles will put approximately 120 Ford Transit Connect CNG taxis on the streets of the second largest city in the U.S. Yellow Cab of Anaheim and Cabco Yellow, Inc. will have the full order of taxis delivered by the end of this year.
According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), CNG is less expensive and burns cleaner than gasoline, resulting in 30 to 40 percent less greenhouse gas emissions. The CNG-powered Ford Transit Connect taxis help reduce overall fleet costs of taxi companies and are a better choice for the environment. Engine prep packages are offered by Ford that allow conversions to both CNG and liquefied propane gas.
“We are adding CNG-powered vehicles to our fleet in order to reduce the effective cost of fuel for our drivers, and to introduce cleaner vehicles for the environment,” said Michael Levine, CEO of Taxi Medallion Management, in a press release.
Also used as a delivery van by many businesses, the Ford Transit Connect offers a unique size and shape that is well suited for navigating narrow, congested city streets. The ample interior space also provides a comfortable ride for passengers with plenty of storage room for luggage or other items.
While Chicago and L.A. are the newest cities to take advantage of the Transit Connect taxis, several other cities are also onboard. In Connecticut, Yellow Cab Company of Hartford and Metro Taxi of West Haven recently ordered a total of 70 Transit Connect CNG taxis. Other cities to order the taxis include Las Vegas and St. Louis. Philadelphia, the fifth-largest metropolitan area in the U.S., is also expected to join the list soon.
California is expected to see a rise in the use of the new taxis after the California Air Resources Board (CARB) approved the use of modified Transit Connect vehicles to run on CNG. CARB is an organization designed to protect public health, welfare and ecological resources through reduction of air pollutants.
Using Ford Transit Connect taxis that run on CNG is a smart choice in many ways. These innovative vehicles are better for the environment, save money on the cost of fuel and provide city passengers with a safe, comfortable and convenient transportation option. Hail one of these taxis today and make the world a better place for tomorrow.
