If your work demands carrying very heavy loads or pulling trailers over 11,300 pounds, then you need a heavy-duty pickup. In Ford language, that’s a Super Duty, and the name really fits. These trucks not only work a lot harder than a standard-duty pickup, they work a lot smarter than competitive heavy-duty pickups.

The 2010 Ford Super Duty isn’t just one truck – it’s an entire lineup with an extensive array of models and capabilities. Choosing the right one is just a matter of matching the cab style, payload/towing capacity and bed length to your needs. Towing capacity is a good illustrator of the breadth of the 2010 Super Duty model range––it ranges from a minimum of 12,500 pounds in an F-250 to an astounding 24,600 pounds in the F-450 with dual rear wheel configuration (“dualie”). 

Ford makes it easy for customers to outfit the Super Duty models, offering full-featured equipment packages. With names like XL, XLT and Lariat, these will be familiar to Ford pickup owners. Ford also knows that even Super Duty owners like some customization and high-end personality in their work vehicles, so the company offers King Ranch and Harley-Davidson editions in the F-250, F-350 and F-450 lines. If you’re towing your custom Harleys to a motorcycle show, there’s no better way to pull up than in a Ford Harley-Davidson Edition Super Duty.

New for 2010, the Cabela’s trim level reflects Ford’s relationship with Cabela’s, the world’s largest outdoor outfitter. The F-250 Cabela’s has an MSRP of $42,655, and this trim line is also available in the F-350 model at $43,615. Both feature a distinctive two-tone paint scheme, specially embossed interior features and – for the avid outdoor enthusiast – additional lockable storage for keeping equipment secure and out of sight.

In every Super Duty model, the “super” starts with a super-strong chassis that affords a best-in-class payload capacity. That’s a minimum carrying capacity of 2,920 pounds (F-250 Crew Cab 4x4 with 6.75-ft. bed), and up to 5,690 pounds in the F-350 Regular Cab 4x2 with eight-foot bed. The more specialized F-450 “dualie” models can take that up to 6,180 pounds.

In the F-250 and F-350 4x2 models, tough twin I-beam front suspension with coil springs provides the toughness and carrying capacity of a beam axle, but with better maneuverability and ride comfort. Ford’s Twin-Coil Monobeam axle is spec’d on models up from there, and on 4x4s.

Ford’s available Tough Bed spray-in bed liner is a more advanced coating than aftermarket hand-spray applications. At the factory, a precision high-pressure automated sprayer applies polyol-based elastomeric film and isocyanate hardener in one thin, smooth, even coat. The result is a uniformly textured surface that helps minimize load slippage and looks better than aftermarket products.

You can’t call a truck Super Duty without giving it the appropriate power. Ford offers three engines in the 2010 Super Duty truck line including the standard 5.4-liter 300-hp Triton V8, the optional 362-hp 6.8-liter Triton gasoline V10 and the unstoppable 6.4-liter Power Stroke^® turbocharged diesel V8. The 350-hp Power Stroke pumps out an amazing 650 lb/ft of torque and is standard in several of the top-end models. Available transmissions in the Super Duty series include a six-speed manual and the five-speed TorqShift^™ automatic, depending on the model and engine.
