Every week, an estimated
25 million viewers watch as the drama unfolds on ER — the television program that tracks the inner workings of a Level One Trauma Center where heroic doctors and nurses are faced with life-and-death decisions on a daily basis. Using a team of real-life emergency room doctors to develop and write the scripts for each episode keeps the drama real and pushes timely medical breakthroughs to the forefront.
METI is the World’s Leading Manufacturer of Human Patient Simulation Technology This fall, the producers of ER contacted Medical Education Technology Inc. (METI) regarding an upcoming episode. One of the staff writers, Joe Sachs, MD of Northridge Hospital Medical Center in Northridge, California, was familiar with the METI technology and wanted to incorporate the METI Emergency Care Simulator (ECS) into a script. In a matter of weeks, the script was complete, the shoot was scheduled and on the way to Hollywood!

METI Training Coordinator, Mark Tuttle and Director of Marketing, Tess Mitchell were on location for two days of shooting.
The opening scene of the episode — currently scheduled to air on NBC November 20 — centers around one of the show’s main characters, Abby, practicing life-saving techniques on the simulator. The ECS showed the seasoned actors a thing or two about drama by simulating a cocaine overdose with hypertension and then dying on the gurney — leaving the cast a bit humbled by the reality of life and death!
“It was a huge honor for METI to be written into the script on this popular television show that emulates what our family of users do every day — save lives. The show embodies the unpredictability of life in the ER and this episode helps to underscore the need for hands-on experience at every level of training and practice,” said Lou Oberndorf, President and CEO of METI. METI is a proud supporter of all emergency room doctors and nurses and we want to share the honor of this moment with the men and women who really do save lives!
