The Future for Medical Education — Core Competency
Medical Education Technologies, Inc. helps schools brace for the changes ahead...

The Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) is on a mission to improve the quality of healthcare in the United States. But in order to establish new standards in patient care, new criteria have to be applied to medical education — forcing learning institutions to find better ways to educate the medical clinicians of tomorrow.

By applying a set list of core competencies to all specialties in American medicine, the ACGME hopes to establish better objectives, organized curriculum and unbiased evidence that every medical program is truly achieving these goals. Between the years of 2006 and 2011, it is expected that all accredited medical learning institutions will have implemented learning objectives based on the core competencies learning model.

The main objectives of this revised model include the mastery and demonstration of the following:
1)       Proper Patient Care
2)       Application of Medical Knowledge to Patient Care
3)       Practice-Based Learning
4)       Interpersonal & Communication Skills
5)       Professionalism
6)       Systems-Based Practice/Teamwork Components

Learning objectives modeled around these six core competencies are expected to produce better healthcare professionals and ultimately increase the quality of patient care in this country.

METI
One medical education company, Medical Education Technologies, Inc. – METI™, is already helping medical institutions transition into a core competency-learning model by providing tools that can meet these new educational expectations. The METI line of human patient simulators provides hands-on clinical applications, realistic exposure to critical care modules, teamwork exercises, and measurable, objective evaluation and assessment protocols. The METI model-driven technology supports all six of the core competencies with a high degree of fidelity and realism, maximizing the educational value of every learning session.

The METI technology makes it possible to help learners improve their performance, develop critical thinking skills and understand care accountability. All METI products, including the Human Patient Simulator – HPS™, Emergency Care Simulator – ECS™, PediaSIM™ and the Pelvic ExamSIM™, were designed to create meaningful learning modules that meet individual objectives and goals. By establishing teaching tools that already meet the new standards and specific criteria to be enforced by the ACGME, METI continues to be the industry leader in both technology and educational support.
