WHILE GOD WAS SLEEPING

Have you ever wondered if you have what it takes to leave everything that is comfortably familiar in order to live and work in an exotic and dangerous country with a political culture akin to a minefield?

SYDNEY MCWILLIAMS, 37, an energetic, driven ER nurse, does just that. Sparked by the ghosts of unfinished business after her mother dies, she departs for Rwanda in 1994 to re-establish a health clinic in a small town.

Before long, JONATHAN, 40, a Rwandan teacher is badgering her about her naivete, while realizing he’s becoming ever more strongly drawn to her. His rival, ANDRE, 39, is a dashing, cynical, man-of-the -world photojournalist, who urges Sydney to loosen up and enjoy the benefits of paradise.

A third man, BUTU, 49, is a tough, manipulative, brutal political boss who throws up every kind of roadblock in Sydney’s path. She is helped by her new best friend, ANNA, 20, a sweet, practical nurse’s aide who invites Sydney to live with her and her mother, GRACE.

Sydney and Butu go back and forth, each trying to outmaneuver the other in order for Sydney to get what she needs for the clinic. At the same time, she and Jonathan treat each other with wary mistrust. He watches, with jealousy, as she takes up Andre on his offer to take her to outlying villages.

Sydney juggles all the demands and needs, becoming increasingly aware of the growing tensions always in the background. In the middle of one night, she, Jonathan and Anna struggle to save a woman’s baby born in breech position. She begins to show an interest in Jonathan’s work. She sells the valuable farewell gift from the folks back home in order to buy supplies on the black market.

Things come to a head at a banquet for the aide workers in the country. Angry militia men break in, bringing the background tensions to the forefront. As she and Jonathan spend a lovely night together, the gates of hell are opening.

The horrors of genocide begin, catching up anyone and everyone who is in the way. Jonathan saves Butu’s own family, but Butu unknowingly burns down the school where they are hidden. Totally out of control, Butu turns on Jonathan and Sydney. Jonathan confronts the murderous crowd as Andre rides in to rescue Sydney.

She watches in horror as Jonathan gives up his life in order for her to escape. Following a mad dash of crashing through roadblocks, dodging bullets and rampaging mobs, Andre gets her to the airport in time to catch the last military rescue flight out. Then he turns back, changed by what he’s witnessed in Sydney’s hopes and determination, and stays to record for humanity the horrors of neighbor killing neighbor.
