"The Big Stick and the Square Deal: The Presidency of Theodore Roosevelt,"  a conference marking the centennial of TR's years in the White House, was held in Buffalo, New York,  October  17-20, 2002.  The conference was the 83rd Annual Meeting of the Theodore Roosevelt Association, and was co-sponsored by the Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural Site Foundation of Buffalo, The Eisenhower Center of the University of New Orleans, and Canisius College in Buffalo. Among the speakers at the conference were such noted historians and writers as Edmund and Sylvia Morris,  H.W. Brands,  Douglas Brinkley, James MacGregor Burns, John Gable,  Edward J. Renehan, Jr.,  Kathleen M. Dalton, and John Milton Cooper.

Over 240 TRA members, from over 30 states, attended the conference, and the Centennial Gala Dinner on Saturday,  October 19,  drew a crowd of over 600, a record for a TRA dinner. At the dinner the Rose Award was presented to Senator Kent Conrad  (D-North Dakota) and former Congressman Paul McHale  (D-Pennsylvania) for their efforts in securing the Medal of Honor for Theodore Roosevelt. The Rose Award is given on an occasional basis to those who have rendered outstanding service to the Theodore Roosevelt Association.   The Theodore Roosevelt(TM) Distinguished Service Medal, the Association's highest honor, also was given at the dinner,  awarded to the crew of the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71)  for service in Operation Enduring Freedom.  The gold medal was presented by TRA President Norman Parsons, and accepted by Captain Richard J. O'Hanlon on behalf of the crew.

At the Annual Meeting of the Board of Trustees of the TRA, Norman Parsons of Sea Cliff, New York was elected to a second one-year term as President.
