Blackbaud announced today the release of its inaugural “State of the Nonprofit Industry” survey results. In a key finding, more than half (59%) of nonprofits reported an increase in their budgets this year.

Three other notable results – an increase in funding new staff positions, in donations made by individuals and in demand for services – provide evidence of a strong nonprofit industry.

Almost 100% (96%) of nonprofits surveyed expect to either maintain or add to executive/management staffing levels this year.

More than half (57%) of nonprofits reported growth in donations from individuals, the single largest source of contributions made each year (according to Giving USA).

Exactly three quarters (75%) of respondents indicated a rise in demand for the services they provide.

“These results are good news for the nonprofit industry.  With more money and staff at their disposal, organizations are better equipped to deliver on their missions,” said Robert J. Sywolski, CEO of Blackbaud. “It is clear, from the growing demand for their services that nonprofits continue to play a vital role in helping those in need.”

Challenges Still Exist

With an increase in demand, however, come continued challenges.  In addition to showing positive signs of growth, the survey provides insights into the issues nonprofits face in managing their operations.

About two-thirds (68%) reported that raising money to fund services was a top management concern.  Participants also ranked expanding these services and developing effective boards to lead their organizations as critical needs.  Opportunities also exist to improve how technology is used to enhance operational effectiveness.

“As a leader in providing technology solutions to nonprofits, Blackbaud pays close attention to the trends in the industry,” said Sywolski.  “This survey not only helps nonprofits better benchmark themselves, but also gives all of us an even better understanding of how this vital industry is evolving.”

About the Survey

The survey was distributed to the nonprofit community through several industry newsletter and targeted emails. Participants answered questions in four key areas deemed vital to the management of a successful nonprofit (Human Resource/Staffing, Funding, Strategy and Technology). More than 1,300 (1,319) people participated in the survey.
