The Alcan Prize for Sustainability is a $1 million prize to be awarded each year to a nonprofit, civil society, or non-governmental organization, based anywhere in the world, for its contributions to economic, environmental, and/or social sustainability. The prize recognizes past performance and helps winning organizations continue to contribute to and impact on sustainability through their ongoing activities.
An international panel of distinguished judges, chaired by Jose-Maria Figueres, Co-CEO of the World Economic Forum and former president of Costa Rica, will select an annual winner. Sustainability: Working together for a better world
Sustainability is defined as progressing economic, environmental and/or social development by helping global citizens meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
The Alcan Prize for Sustainability identifies and recognizes not-for-profit, civil society and non-governmental organizations for their contributions to economic, environmental and/or social sustainability. The Prize recognizes past performance and helps winning organizations continue to contribute to and impact on sustainability through their ongoing activities.
Created in 2004 in association with the International Business Leaders Forum, the US$1-million Alcan Prize for Sustainability is one of the world's most significant, privately-funded awards for not-for-profit, civil society and non-governmental organizations.
Prize recipients will be selected based on an evaluation by an independent, high-level, international panel of distinguished judges.
In addition to the US$1 million prize to be awarded to a single organization, the adjudication panel will have the opportunity to recognize non-winning finalists by awarding Alcan Bursaries. The bursaries will be awarded at the discretion of the adjudication panel based on merit. Alcan Bursaries will be offered to a suitably qualified senior member of staff to participate in the one year, part-time Post Graduate Certificate in Cross Sector Partnership accredited by the University of Cambridge. The course is a mix of residential and distance learning, run in partnership with International Business Leaders Forum and the University of Cambridge Program for Industry.

Assessment
Incoming entries that meet the eligibility criteria will be reviewed by an independent panel of assessors. The guiding principle of the assessment process will be the demonstration of a comprehensive approach to addressing, achieving and further advancing sustainable development.
June 2004
Announcement of Shortlist
Assessors will select a maximum shortlist of 12 applicants. The shortlist will be announced and contacted by the International Business Leaders Forum, who will request and require additional information from the shortlisted organizations for purposes of validation.
June - September 2004
Review and Verification of Entries
Comprehensive profiles of the shortlisted applicants will be reviewed by the International Business Leaders Forum as part of the verification process.

Adjudication Panel
All profiles will be considered by an independent panel, composed of high level, leading individuals and/or sustainability experts, who will select the Prize recipient based on: |
