Electronic Filing for Nonprofits

Pennsylvania made news earlier this year by becoming the first state to accept annual nonprofit registration statements electronically (including state registration forms and Form 990 or 990-EZ plus schedules and attachments). Colorado, New York and Illinois are close behind, with plans to offer e-filing for nonprofits later this spring. They are leading the way in a pilot project to help lay the groundwork for e-filing nationally; the Internal Revenue Service plans to offer e-filing to nonprofits as soon as 2004, for fiscal year 2003.

Find out more about e-filing for nonprofits at www.form990.org. To e-file in Pennsylvania, visit http://efile.form990.org.

This project is managed by the National Center for Charitable Statistics at the Urban Institute (NCCS), in collaboration the National Association of Attorneys General/National Association of State Charity Officials (NAAG/NASCO) and GuideStar. The pilot states are California, Colorado, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Mexico, New York, Tennessee, and Washington.
