The Company
Elan Nutrition, located in Grand Rapids, MI, is a company composed of nutritionist and food scientists that create, manufacture, and package food nutrition bars for a variety of markets including sports, health, wellness, diet, and meal replacement. Their 230,000 square foot facility contains pharmaceutical level machinery and scientific technology for the production of these bars.
The Problem
Elan was experiencing repetitive failures on a competitor's encoder resulting in costly down time on their machinery. While their encoder configuration could be considered a North American standard, the lead-time for a replacement encoder from Germany, was quoted at 6 weeks. Not having a replacement encoder in stock, a 6 week lead time to get a replacement encoder would mean that nutrition bar production would be halted for 6 weeks! This was totally unacceptable! They needed an encoder, and they needed it NOW!
The Solution
Elan went to their distributor, Industrial Controls in Zeeland, MI. Industrial Controls worked with EPC's helpful sales staff to cross-reference the encoder. Once the order was placed with EPC, we built and drop shipped the replacement encoder to Elan using our next day expedite service. We use two production shifts, 16 hours each day to produce high quality/high performance encoders such as the unit Elan was needing. In the manufacturing production world, down-time is money.
